As the subject of the "Stop / Start" seems to have raised questions on the QQ Battery here are hopefully some facts on the Type of Battery used that might help. I checked our 1,2L QQ Battery and this is it : Renault Nissan 12V-L3 EFB 70Ah 720A (EN) - Manufacturer FIAMM (Italy).I hope this helps us to understand more what we are driving on a daily basis - Dave The Battery appears to have EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) Technology, see the following comments :

Power and Reliability - EFB Introduction
Batteries with Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB) technology are
built for higher performance and reliability than conventional flooded
batteries and can support entry-level start-stop functionality. For
standard vehicles, EFB technology provides enhanced starting power for reliable
performance throughout the day and can power the ever-increasing electrical
demands of many vehicles. EFB technology provides double the cyclic stability
of standard lead acid batteries, which allows for a longer lifespan of
recovering from deep discharges. In a start-stop
vehicle, when the engine is "off', EFB allows the vehicle's electrical devices
to stay powered on, while ensuring the engine will consistently restart in a
fraction of a second. EFB
Applications Electronic features such as DVD players, GPS, heated
seats and audio systems all add to the demand on a battery. EFB
technology provides a more durable and reliable battery to power your vehicle's
electronics and give you extra peace of mind. Higher-quality
materials extend battery life and minimize vibration so that you can depend on
your battery even longer. Start-stop
vehicle technology automatically shuts off the engine when your vehicle stops,
such as at a traffic light or in stop-and-go traffic, and restarts it quickly
and quietly when the clutch is engaged or the brake pedal is released. When the engine is off, the battery is the sole source of
power to all the car's electrical devices, such as air conditioning, the radio
and the navigation system. In
order to power electrical loads during engine-off periods and to support a high
number of starts per trip, these vehicles need technology like the EFB with
superior cycling capability, charge acceptance and the ability to operate at a
low state of charge. EFB
Construction Enhanced Flooded Batteries are made with stronger, more
durable materials than traditional batteries for longer life and reliability.
Components are packed tightly into the case, creating a custom fit, which gives
the battery vibration resistance. EFB
technology contains a veil-like material called a scrim. The scrim is made of a
porous plastic material that helps support the positive paste on the grid when
the battery is charged and discharged. Without a scrim and separator, the paste
can weaken, fall off, and drop beneath the grids into the acid. Having
this scrim surrounding the separator reinforces the active materials and offers
longer life under severe discharging conditions. EFB technology is designed to avoid early battery failure
from acid stratification by using the acceleration and deceleration of the
vehicle to actively mix the acid solution. This unique mixing system gives the
battery a higher level of reliability.
EFB Benefits: Reliable starting performance / Excellent
cycling ability / Longer life than traditional lead-acid batteries / Maintenance-free
/ Lower cost than AGM batteries / Extended cycle life compared with a
conventional battery / Designed
for vehicles with conventional Start-Stop functionality / EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery)
technology with consistently high performance for highly equipped cars / Clean manufacturing a€“ with 20%
less energy and 20% fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Disadvantages:
Slightly less power and durability than AGM batteries / Does not
support advanced start-stop functionality such as regenerative braking.

As always, another very informative factual post! Thanks! However...[quote"]]Does not support advanced start-stop functionality such as regenerative braking[/quote"]] I seem to recall that the QQ does have "regenerative braking" system as such (so does the Micra, and I assume will use the same EFB battery), although I understand it selectively increases the output from the alternator during specific periods. It could be that the regenerative bit is "entry level" as such and thus does not offer a huge amount of power increase compared to some other systems.

Splank, good comment at least you read it obviously some info' is missed, I believe this could be what you mean - Sorry Dave Smart Energy Management: Stop
/ Start System is combined with alternator regeneration, using
deceleration energy to charge the battery. The regenerative braking
system alone is responsible for a 3% reduction in CO2

http://www.bbif.co.uk/wp-content/upload ... F.pdfQuite an interesting read... although its more about stop/start lolStill cant find any information regarding how you could recharge these batteries. I am not sure if your standard lead acid charger would do it much good and would require a special smart charger.

Well written and informativeIm suprised a 1.2 engine runs a 720A battery DaveAnyway scrim batteries I assumed have been around for decades now and EFB not that much afterwardsI was expecting some state of the art batterys to be honest, not moaning as they work well just thought it would of been more cutting edge to be honestMind you come replacement time thats a big bonus

Good Morning Donkey, you raised a question yesterday with regard to the figure mentioned in the Battery Spec for the 1,2L QQ Motor. In case you are confused on this figure here are a few facts on it - Dave Renault Nissan 12V-L3 EFB 70Ah 720A > CCA Figure (EN) :Cold cranking amperes (CCA) is the amount of current a battery
can provide at 0 A°F (a?’18 A°C). The rating is defined as the current a
lead-acid battery at that temperature can deliver for 30 seconds and
maintain at least 1.2 volts per cell (7.2 volts for a 12-volt battery).
It is a more demanding test than those at higher temperatures. This is
the most widely used cranking measurement for comparison purposes.

Great article Dave as usual and very informative for future use. I am going to print out a sticker to put on my battery to ensure no one uses the negative terminal for any jump starts etc. I wonder how the electronics would cope with these so called emergency start devices you can plug into your cigarette lighter.I also wonder what the cost of these batteries will be to replace and are they going to be like the lesser spotted 19 inch tyres the nationwide tyre distributors don't seem to want to stock, are we going to be forced down the dealer route for a costly replacement?
