Brake lights issue

I found this on another forum:
"Almost certainly, the earth return from your rear lights is faulty; so the curent is going to earth through the tail light circuit. When you put power in to that circuit, the current being applied to the brake lights has no where to go. If you have a separate earth return line from each light unit check if they are connected back to the earth terminal on the battery. This will probably be the negative terminal. If you don’t have separate earth returns then the current is intended to go back to earth via the bodywork; so look for corrosion between the light units and the bodywork."
