Hi folks, will be looking to buy a MK1 QashQai later this year after the arrival of baby no.2. Looking at automatic transmission, 2.0 under 80,000 miles, acenta spec and above. Wondering what I should be looking out for in the second hand QashQai market. Any common issues with auto transmission or in general with models of this ilk. Also, what mileage do you think is too high to be forking out £4-5,000 on a second hand motor? Any advice much appreciated. Tia

Autotrader for that price range is listing 16 autos (of which 3 are Visias ruling them out) compared to 244 manuals so it looks like the main issue is going to be finding one never mind having a choice.

5 are diesel (with DPFs)

Seems like the petrol autos were CVT and the diesel autos were 6-speed torque converters.

ionfly, I do not want to throw any negatives into your choice but recently there have been posts on the problems on the Nissan Gearboxes if it is in fact a CVT made by Jatco in Japan. There has been an issue for years on this Box and especially in the US. Just enter in “Search” - “CVT Gearbox” or similiar and take a read, it is most likley wiser to know what you are going to get - Money is Money Dave 😉

Thanks Dave - throw all the negatives you like, that's what I'm after!! Haha... We're aware of the CVT issues, so will be giving that one a wide berth. Am I right in thinking Qashqai's also have a normal, non cvt automatic transmission, or do all automatic QQ's use cvt?

Thanks gloucester - only read your second message originally! My mistake... There are a few in that price range, but admittedly we're probably going to have to stretch the budget to £6k or £7k.

Wasn't there a normal 6 speed auto box on some mk1 versions? And what of the issues with the DPF, are they solved by a good blast down the motorway, or is that something completely different that I'm thinking of?

I've read that if you get the right QQ, you'll be set for years to come, but seems a little like putting your finger to the wind which doesn't seem wise when stretching to find a good, solid, reliable family car.

Also, would it be wrong to assume a CVT that has reached 50/60,000 miles is more than likely going to hold it's own for a while to come, and not one that has failed after 12/25/33,000 miles, or is that again a bit of a gamble? Just ALOT of conflicting experiences on CVT transmissions out there..m

Don't buy a CVT there have been problems. Check out the issues in the USA. They had to give 10 year warranties eventually. I have a 14 month CVT and it is fine but had I known what I know now I would have bought a Kia or Hyundai. I was supporting the local industry at Sunderland at the time by buying Nissan and I hope I don't regret it.

Any particular reason you 'need' an automatic, or just fancy one ? Lots more to choose from if you don't have to have one.
