I bought my 2016 Qashqai a year ago and have not yet had it serviced.

I noticed this appears to be overdue. My records show it had a minor service on 29/9/2017 - Service mileage 2919, then it had a major service on 19/9/2018 - service mileage 6533. I had assumed it was serviced just before I bought it but there is no record of another service, so it is overdue, currently the mileage is about 13,000.

What are the service intervals? And should I always go to a Nissan dealer to have it serviced?

12 months or 18,000 miles, whichever comes first.
I'd suggest that you would be well advised to book a service.

Is a service from a Nissan dealer better than a service from another garage?

Firstly welcome to the Forum. This old post attachment found in the “Search” Area might well be worth a read -Dave 😉
The decision of using a Nissan Dealer is usually Financial as it can cost more than an independent. I have had 5 Nissan’s all Serviced by Nissan just to keep the Service Book & Guarantee Coverage in Order.

How does this affect my warranty? The car is a 2016 model and it looks like it missed a service last year. I can't seem to find the warranty period for my car.

Welcome to this forum.

The service schedule should be adhered into the front of your service book, which I presume you have.

You haven't said whether your car is petrol or diesel but at that low mileage accumulation it's irrelevant. For a 2016 you should have a petrol service every 12,500 miles and a diesel service every 18,000 miles but both also have a 12 month time stipulation.

Hence you're well overdue for a service and I'd suggest having a major service and include brake fluid replacement if not offered (it should be).

Nissan only gives a three-year warranty so unless extended yours will have expired.

There's little point in having a dealer service with the missing 3-year service. Even a minor service costs £229/£269 petrol/diesel with a major service being approx £309/£369 approx. However you DO get roadside assistance thrown in.

For example Halfords do a major petrol service (albeit noted annual) for £225 saving around £85. Kwikfit appears to be £150 though excluding brake fluid and possibly pollen filter, both included with Halfords.

Since you seem not to know much about the car, you might also check you have a current MoT!

I guess it would be worth double checking with the dealer who supplied the car - maybe they did have it serviced and didn't give you the paper work. A letter from them stating this could then live in your service book to reassure the person who buys it after you move on.

Thanks for that advice, I will do that. With lockdown it appears they are not open at the moment, but I know the owner so I don't see a problem.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your detailed response. I have a Halfords and Kwik-Fit just round the corner so I'll go with one of them.

MOT was done in August so no worries with that.
