Considering a QashQai, after some advice and honest comments.

Post by Mr_G » Mon Feb 22, 2021 10:28 am

Hi guys,

I've done an intro post, but I guess where Im going with this is thatg Birmingham in making the Clean Air Zone live in a few months, and we're considering a replacement car for my dad, well our hand is going to be forced.

We have shortlisted a few contentders, with tje QashQui being one of them so really just after some honest drivers views and comments please, common problems and what to look out for.

So, we're considering either a 2015 shape QashQui, or maybe just something slightly older, in the previous shape.

Currently my dad drives a 2010 Mercedes C-Class Diesel, but this will incur an £8 per day charge to drive through town, so we either need a Euro4+ Petrol or a Euro6+ Diesel. If im honest, I dont want him to buy a Diesel and he only does around 15 mile round trip to work with the odd weekend usage, and thats probably no more than 20 miles on a weekend, so Diesel would be clogged up in no time.

He wants economy, cheap tax, something a little higher up than the C-Class, usual mod cons so DAB, Parkin Sensors, Sat Nav, not ovely fussed about leather, and but it must be an Auto.

I have seen some 2015/2016 1.2 Petrol models in Auto for around £10k-£11k. Also seen some slightly older 2013'ish 1.6 Petrol's.

What are these like?
Any common problems we should look out for?
What model should we consider?
Whats the auto-box like?
Is a 1.2 Petrol economical with it being a modern enginer?
What should we steer clear of?

Im sure many more questions will be borne out of your feedback, so please bear with me.

Any much thanks in advance.

With regards,
G.

Two points

The 1.2 petrol is VERY unreliable - check out other topics on here. [*]
The CVT is unreliable - check out other topics on here.

My honest advice would be to look elsewhere. But then I did so I would say that wouldn't I ! :)

I had the 1.5 diesel.
It was quiet (certainly in comparison to my old RAV4 diesel) and very economical, especially on long motorway runs. I never had a single problem w.r.t. reliability - nearly 30,000 trouble free miles.
I can’t comment on how suitable it might be w.r.t. clean air zones but I imagine it shouldn’t be too difficult to look up the relevant data.

Unfortunately, although many of them must be absolutely fine, I would personally steer clear of a 1.2 petrol car. Same comment for the old CVT gearbox.

I switched from a Mercedes B Class 180 diesel to a J11 Qashqai(newer shape) 1.6 diesel with CVT gearbox. My CVT box on the B class was excellent and I did 125k miles, theCVT box on the Qashqai, I think, is better. CVT gearboxes are no more or less reliable than other auto boxes, but, they need regular oil changes 40 - 50k mile intervals. The road tax on my current car is £30 per annum, much less than the B Class and on a run regularly get nearly 60mpg, I am not a heavy right foot driver though :D. My 1.6 diesel is acceptable in the London LEX but not the ULEZ zone or the Birmingham zone, but is OK when the Bath zone starts
Past cars Mercedes B Class, S Class, E Class Estate, E Class Coupe, G Wagen, 260E interspersed with Peugeot 406 and Audi Coupe.

One thing to consider if you ARE looking at diesels too - well two things actually.

The 1.5 diesel has a cambelt - so needs replacing at 5 years and 72k-90k miles. Other engines all have cam chains which are supposedly more reliable and don't need changing until around 175k miles - but there are problems with the 1.2 engine...

The 1.5 diesel up until the road tax changes a few years ago was rated £0 for road tax.

... but you DO need to check the emissions. Let's see...

If your vehicle meets the following emission standards you will not need to pay the daily charge:

Euro 6 (VI) or better for diesel engine
Euro 4 or better for petrol engines
For diesel/petrol electric hybrids the vehicle should meet the relevant emission standards
Fully electric or hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles will not need to pay the charge

So checking on brochures:

J10:

All engines in 2008 were EU4.
All engines in 2010 were EU5.
All engines in 2013 were EU5.

J11:

All engines in late 2014 were EURO5b+
All engines in late 2015 were EURO6b
(I don't have a catalogue between 2014-09 and 2015-11)

J11b:

All engines in mid 2017 were EURO6b
All engines in late 2018 were Euro6b except the 1.5 diesel was EURO6d-temp
All engines in mid 2019 were Euro6d-temp

Interestingly I find Autotrader has a ULEZ option nowadays and you can search on price so you can easily find the cheapest auto diesel Tekna - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-detail ... 2167161658

Thank you Gloucester. AutoTrader allows searched for ULEZ, but Birmingham CAZ is different.

Great information you have provided, thanks.
