There is no bike racks which will wreck your car.
I do not recommend to go for Cycle carrier as this option may scratch your bikes( unless you go mental protecting them)
Towbar fitted bike racks or roof bike racks all works fine with different level of security for your bikes, but good level of holding security and stability.
Currently I’m with option as follow:
Thule Evo Raised Rail Footpack 7104
Thule Wingbar Evo 127 - Black
Thule Proride 591
You can see on the picture bellow.
I’m thing to change the way to towbar racks thule velospace xt3 as this option gives you the advantage to fit towbar box when you don’t need to carry bikes.

That's about the max weight it can handle I guess? Here we are 4 and do not have fancy lightweight bikes so on the roof is quite soon not longer an option.
About not wrecking the car.... When I think of those bike carriers that hang on the tail door that you see a lot in France... I can't imagine those being healthy for your car...
Remains the bike carrier on the back for me but that requires a tow hook as well.
So for now we are travelling by car or on foot

I was with bike carrier as shown on the picture bellow. No problem for your car even if one of the arm is propped on the rear window(windscreen).
The only problem is the access to the boot and the time to put the bike correctly to prevent from scratches on the bikes ( I used to use empty plastic bottles and tape to make it safe for bikes)
Regarding the weight...my 3 bikes on the picture above are approx 38kg, no problem on the motorway whatsoever even with high winds.
We are 4 as well, I put my little one bike in the boot + trailer :)

Exactly, that are those carriers that give me the thrills.
Beside of the hinges of the tail gate that aren't designed for such an additional force, how can it not be a problem if this rack + the weight of your bikes smashes into the rear window when taking bumbs. It works for sure but I would prefer to avoid exposing my car to this.

So each of your bikes weighs 38Kg?
So that means you're putting 114Kg on the roof + the weight of your roofbars while the roofrails are designed for 75 Kg only.

My kids are bigger so the extra bike doesn't fit in the trunk neither.
