Nissan is planning to use its crossover models to launch its autonomous tech, with self-driving systems being introduced in the next two years.
Autonomous safety features could debut in Nissan’s crossover line-up, but Moss confirmed it will eventually filter down to the entire model range, and, while the technology may be pitched towards the top-end of the crossover trim levels at first, it would soon be made available to a bigger market further down the range.

Autonomous Technology in Qashqai first?
Not sure i'd be the first to test out Nissans take on this.
The car is mostly very good but the early issues with the Forward emergency brakes and the ongoing issues with parking sensors and blind spot sensors (and the rain/water) don't give a bedrock of confidence.
I appreciate it will be different technology utilised to perform most of these functions but it's an area i'm not convinced they have nailed down yet.

Nissan no more...

On Sky News it was reported that a DVD player was found in the car. Looks like the driver may have been too distracted.

gloucester, it looks like your comment could be correct on the DVD Player. I have attached an interesting webpage on "Driverless Cars" with lots of touch webs if members are interested and have the time - Dave

they are making it sound better than it is really and only trusting it at low speeds.
You also may have a conflict with your insurance company for autonomous driving in which a normal policy may not cover you correctly for non-human assisted driving. There is I believe only 1 insurance product out in the wild which covers such events.

Steve, a very good point regarding Insurance. Do you know if there are any clauses in existing Ins. Policies now regarding this point or is it a point that has to be worked out personally with the Ins. Co. Surely this point must have been thought about with the surge of this developement - Regards Dave

Depends on the policy.... most will probably say you should have full control of the car at all times... this will probably change over time as new products come out, but this tech being fed out into cars is, in the grand scheme of things (compared to what google are doing), fairly low and I guess manuf stipulate you should still be in control and aware rather than relying on it to take you forward as you turn around and talk to the kids in the back..... More of an advanced driving aid (like our brake assist), rather than autonomous like they are pushing.
This has just popped up on BBC as well... Death through to have been a result of using Tesla's automated driving system
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-36680043
What I cant figure out from that, Tesla state you must be 'in control' (read: have your hands on the wheel at all times and as observant as you would be normally), so not quite sure if the driver was not as observant (from reading, it sounds like this may not e the case) or if the car potentially caused the accident.....
