Shilts, cleaning and polishing of vehicles is usually a personal preference as there is stuff you like and do not like. I still use "Car Plan" Black Trim Wax (it is black and you need disposable gloves), but now I use also "Mothers" / USA "Black to Black" (this is clear) and both do the job well. If you look around there are now so many products on the market that the decision is difficult, in the end it boils down to experience, previous usage - Dave

Try Autofiness Revive for the black plastic. Apply a bit with a sponge (I buy a pack of scouring pads from the supermarket, and cut them into pieces). You work it into the plastic, and it will keep it looking good for ages. For engine bay, I use a Tesco (other brands available ) All Purpose Cleaner, cost about 80p for a bottle. Put into a spray bottle, diluted 10:1 and spray on the engine. Wipe in with a cloth, then use a damp cloth to mop up. If you want some good advice in cleaning, try looking at detailingworld forum - just keep your cards in your pocket!

Mechanic friend of mine uses a standard kitchen degreaser in the engine bay, a wheel brush to agitate and a standard jet wash on a high power mist setting to wash off. Seen him do it hundreds of times and he's not once had problems with the electrics at all.
