In my 'youth days' yes.... however standard air intakes are designed not to only decrease noise but also to aid air flow performance for the particular engines. The air intake in my Pulsar for example sucks air from the inner front wing area so ensuring no hot air is sucked in. In the QQ, it sucks air from the front of the car, again sucking cool air in.

By changing to a cone style filter, thus changing the air intake pipework can result in loss of power through a air flow characteristic change or sucking in hotter air.

Even replacement panel filters from paper to cotton based are not that great as they allow larger bits of dirt through, or even oil from the filter itself which could lead to increased engine ware or part damage. Moving your air intake into the engine bay could result in loss of power through hot air ingestion! Essentially, there is no benefit to a replacement after market filter any more for standard or 'just a bit better than standard' tune.

Yes, these air filters did help many years ago when air box designs were poor, or flow rate through a paper filter was low, but the situation has improved. Paper filters have a very large surface area these days and are not has bad as they used to be.

Essentially, if you want noise.... go for it.... if you want standard power, swap out your paper filter often! If you want to tune your engine, then if its a mild tune, a paper filter is still your best bet. Start to go down the road of replacement turbo then a higher flow filter maybe needed!!
