Dragstar - VAT is irrelevant - you don't lose it as you suggest. A car is worth what someone will pay for it.

You have to realise that there's going to be a significant difference between the price of a car bought from a dealer and the trade in price. £3.5k in a year doesn't sound too bad at all! It'll be back on the forecourt at, say £1.5k more thus has actually dropped only £2k in one year.

Compare that to a new car. My Tekna was bought 18 months ago at £18k - compared to its original list price of £25.2k - a theoretical loss of £7.2k in 8 months. I've had a £12,380 trade in quote meaning an actual drop of £5620 in 18 months. A bit depressing but I'm waiting for a petrol auto T-Roc when its introduced in 2018.
