With Nissan not supplying a spare wheel and just giving us a can of gunk, why, I wonder did they not follow other manufacturers and supply run flat tyre with their cars. I have used them on a few of my cars in the past and don't find them any less hard on suspension than tubed tyres and also not must more expensive either.

Cost, they sell the spare tyre kit including foams.
The reason for not supplying a spare would be to reduce cost and also meat MPG by loosing the extra weight.
Run flats would bring the cost of making the car up.

I can understand your cost reason, however, in the quantities that car manufacturers purchase tyres, I would not think cost would come into the equation. My previous car, a B Class Mercedes, I bought a set of run flats Goodyear 215/45/17 for less than £50 per tyre(plus fitting) only a couple of years ago. Yes they were cheap, I can only think the manufacturer over produced and needed the sales as the non run flats were more expensive.

You do realise cars have not used tubed tyres for 30 - 40 years, maybe longer!! Did you mean Tubeless?

Run-flat tyres have very hard sidewalls which makes them good for some performance cars, but for most, it makes the ride very hard and uncomfortable making them only suitable for good quality roads which are few and far between.

With tyres inflated at correct pressures, there is little or no difference in sidewall deflection for obvious reasons.

With TPMS, less need to run flats

You cannot have runflats on a car without tyre pressure monitors of some description. How would you know if you had a puncture?

Qashowner, these so called “Run Flat Tyres” have been around for many years originally developed in the 30’s and therefore never used with the TPMS System as this was a newer developement in the 80’s. These comments might help to cover this point - Dave 🙂

From National Tyres
Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
Run flats must only be installed on a car which has TPMS/tyre pressure monitoring system. TPMS alerts the driver to a puncture so they are aware that they have a limited time to replace their tyre, and so they drive within the limits of their deflated tyre (see our section on tyre-pressure for more detail)
