In the old days I've seen mechanics rev an engine by pulling/pressing things under the bonnet.

Is this possible on a J11?

I've got a tinny heat shield style rattle that I'm trying to locate, so could do with revving it myself whilst listening.

No...the days of carb linkages are nearly gone. Analogue days

Digital days now, you'll need an assistant on the accelerator pedal.

Ok fair enough.

Tried both the wife and the kids as the assistant, and neither seem to be able to hold it at the spot where it's making the rattle long enough for me to pin it down.

Try wedging a stick, that will give the constant revs you need.
