Hi all, I hope we are all safe and well.

I am new to the forum and would like to ask for your advice around an issue we have been and still are having with our 2015 Auto 1.2 Quashqai.

Back in 2017 shortly after we bought is (used) we started hearing a metallic rattling sound coming from the engine whenever we pulled off or accelerated in Lowe gears. As the vehicle was still in warranty this went to Nissan 3 times for them to repair. The timing belt was changed twice during the first two repairs of which the gave a temporary stop on the noise. Finally on the 3rd visit to the garage Nissan admitted they weren’t too sure and decided to replace the engine entirely. The engine was eventually replaced in June 2018.

The replacement lasted around a year before the return of the rattling sound. I have been monitoring the oil levels and this is always fine (bar one top up). The noise is now so bad that we are avoiding driving the vehicle completely. Despite complaining to Nissan they are completely wiping their hands of us and hve refuses to help, despite their “new engine” lasting less than two years.

I have a video of the noise that I will try and upload but would like to see if anyone else has had this issue, if so what was the cause/repair? I have read that a batch of Quashqai’s have had timing chain and tensioner issues but have never been able to put my finger on it.

Any help/advice/thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Lee, firstly welcome to the Forum. It appears that you are experiencing the problem a lot of members had or are having with the 1,2L engine quality and oil loss. This problem has generated one of, if not the biggest Post ever on the Forum and I can only suggest you sit down with a Beer or two and see if you can gain some advice. It is another of these known Nissan Quality Problems but how you get around this I have no idea except for Legal Advice. I am sure some members will make their comments on your problem, as our 1,2 L was one of the “Good” ones for 5 years.Hopefully you will get the info’ you want - Dave

When you mention “Nissan” does that mean you were dealing through a Private Nissan Dealership or a Nissan Co. Dealer. Did you or have you complained in writing to NCS with a Ref No: on your Problems ? because this should mean you facts are on file. Did you get a Guarantee with the new Engine or has this coverage now finished ?

Hi Dave, thanks for the response it makes me feel a little better just having someone else that understands the issue. I will Sit down and have a look through the forum to see what others I’ve had to do.

We had all the repairs and engine replacement done through Sturgess in Leicester and we have all the detail on paper thankfully. The new engine came with a 3 month warranty so we are outside of this now.

Lee, I read your comment on the 3 months Guarantee last night and was of the same opinion as Colin, but found nothing. Took another look today and found some Nissan and private comments - Dave

I think you need to question this, but is the new engine a Nissan Replacement or a Re-Engineered Job from a Private Company ?

Thats a repaired engine IMO...perhaps short block/refurb cylinder head only. Parts have usual warranty..assembly/install has a few months by the look of it. Do you have the original engine number...needs checking.

Thanks all I will do some digging through the paperwork and check. I have booked the car in for a diagnostic next week so hopefully we can get the process started.

Sturgess does not appear to be a Nissan dealership? Would therefore eliminate any Nissan warranty
