Hi Everyone.

I am a delighted owner of a 2012 QQ+2 1,6dci which has now done 165K miles almost without any problems at all, actually the only issue has been a front wheel bearing that I replaced myself. However, within the year its coming up to the 180K point that the book indicates requires a camchain replacement, has anybody had this done, does it really need doing if you have changed the oil religiously every 9K? It doesn't have a cam chain rattle and I have had the aux drive belt replaced once at 90K and would have that done at the 180K anyway.

My local independent garage that does anything I don't do on the car doesn't seem keen to do the chain as they tell me they don't have the service tools to do it.

I would be very interested in what other members think. In the family at the moment we have a diesel Toyota with 310K on it that hasn't had the chain changed and seems quiet and smooth so does that Renault R9M engine really need it changed if it isn't rattling?

Many thanks Dave j

DaveJ, as you have mentioned it all appears well at present, oil changes done, quite, no rattles, no problems at present, but the Big question is will it continue to be OK or is there a major problem going to happen. It’s a piece of mind decision as the chain could have stretched over those Kms.
You obviously require some feedback from members with R9M Engines with high Kms on their QQ’s.
If you look at the attached video, engine out being worked on you can see why your Service Guys are not happy to do it. It could well be a Big Cost Factor to get it done but again you will have piece of mind - Sorry not of much help ! Dave 😉

Hi Dave, Yep, it is a difficult call and as you say I need some feedback from other members here with higher mileages. Clearly it depends on cost but I am willing to pay for piece of mind, for example we regularly drive long distances in Europe and after living in Wien our daughter has now moved to Munich and I need a vehicle that I can absolutely be confident will get there and back without difficulty at any time of the year. I have seen advertised on the net a garage that does the chain on these engines. They say they can do it without taking out the engine for I think about £700, which seems reasonable. One youtube clip I have seen showed not the main chain that was worn but the oil pump drive chain, which had stretched and as it doesn't have a tensioner was slack. However, it probably wasn't anywhere near breaking or jumping. My previous experience of cam chains has always been that they rattle until the noise prompts you to get it done. My other tack is going to have a conversation with a local diesel specialist that I used to change the injectors in my Toyota, they were great and I would certainly trust them to do a good job! I wouldn't go anywhere near my local Nissan dealer. Thanks Dave j
