Qashqai Model: Mk.2 Qashqai Facelift - J11b (2017–2021)

Post by alchemist »

Hi I’m Steve and have bought a 67 plate 1.2 Tekna Qashqai xtronic and so far I’m loving it. I’ve never had a Nissan before. My last couple of cars were Lagunas Mks 2 and 3. Mk 2 was a nightmare everything that could go wrong did, the Mk 3 however was great over the 8 years of my ownership and I was kind of sad to let it go (a dream in fact - 58 plate 2.0 DCI 126k and still going strong but I wanted a change) and as it was based on some sort of Nissan tech that did have some influence on my decision to buy the Qashqai. I have browsed the forum the last few days and found it really interesting and informative. Before test driving the Qashqai I was conscious about the (on paper) lack of performance compared to the 2L turbo diesel Laguna but in all honesty I’ve not really noticed too much difference – could be my 2L DCI was knackered lol. I was also concerned about the keyless entry and associated security issues, but having read through this forum I think I understand the risk now. If someone could confirm my understanding it would be appreciated. You press the door handle button and it sends a signal to the fob which in turn replies allowing the door to open – my choices are therefore to put the fob in a faraday bag , or using the car menus disable the button – this then means the fob is passive and would be thieves trying to do the relay thing would be thwarted (?) and only a press of the fob button opens the doors? If anyone has the time to respond it would be appreciated
Thanks
Steve.

As far as I'm aware the menus will not disable the door buttons...just configures their functionality.

Welcome to this forum.

I'd have to confess I never bothered with "key security" with either my Qashqai or my current car.

Alchemist, welcome to the Forum. If you are worried about the I-Key situation did you read this post which is where there are a lot of facts. I bought a Themis Pouch years ago after speaking to the manufacturer here in Germany and have used one for years - all explained on the post showing one sectioned. You stick the I-Key in the rear of the pouch and there is no function or supposedly copying. To drive or action the QQ you place the key in the front area which is the unprotected area and press the button and HiHo it functions. IMHO a worthwhile tool for a minimal layout - Dave 😉

Thanks for the info Dave.
I've bought a pouch of amazon and tested it - seems to work well.

I looked in the menu & there is the ability to turn i-key functionality off. I assume this stops the door press to open option.

I have the keyless entry function turned OFF via the car’s settings menu. This disables the buttons on the door handles and boot from being used to unlock the car. The only option to unlock the car is to use the key fob.

I have stood next to the car with the key fob in my hand and pressed the button on the door handle and the car remains locked. The only thing it appears to activate is the red light on the parking brake and the corresponding red symbol in the instrument cluster.

I also use a faraday pouch, as recommended on here many times by DaveBerlin and others.
