I was in Colorado recently and whilst phoning using your "cell phone" is discouraged it isn't yet outlawed.
Similarly, drivers of "semi" trucks are still allowed to send text messages whilst driving - baffling beyond words.

Personally, I have my phone connected to the Connect system and am able to make and receive calls and compose/send and receive text messages - all "hands free" via Bluetooth.

Irritatingly I still see folk in both cheap and expensive cars holding their phone to their ear while driving - some must be Bluetooth enabled.
The most irritating thing by far though is numpties who are obliviously writing text messages whilst driving.

Terry, I could not agree with you more see it here also daily but if you try to inform you get lots of verbals and funny hand movements. I found this info‘ which is interesting as a comparison and that the U.K. is pretty hot on this subject - Dave 😲

Dave the increase in fines and points in the UK has actually made the problem worse, it has made it more dangerous before people just held there phone up in front of them while reading sending text, this was dangerous.
Now they try to conceal it by holding the phone down below the steering wheel, this means there's eyes are are now taken 100% away from the road for longer periods.
I am sure if they started issuing instant on the spot bans( First time caught 1 month ban second time 3 month and so on ) and your car got towed if so cost to get it out plus a fine, this would start to get the message across.
But there is still the problem of who is going to enforce the rules ?
The increase in fines did not seam to stop it happening but if you take them off the road just as you do with drink drivers you remove the problem.

Does it matter if it's detecting the driver or the passenger, or the phone being used as a satnav? It's a simple sign that should just act as a reminder to those who "forget" that they can't use a phone a drive, if they are. Otherwise, to those who follow the law its just another sign on the road.

But, just like most other signs on the roads these days, people who phone and text while driving will simply ignore them anyway. I see it every day. The tragedy is that there simply is no one around to enforce the law these days. More coppers on the ground and much stronger fines / consequences are whats needed.

We confiscate cars for no tax, mot or insurance, and in some cases crush them. How about adding speeding, phone use and drink / drug driving to that list. Especially in the case of drink / drug driving their vehicle should be crushed. I say from a ratty Fiat Uno for the top of the range Lamborghini, crush'em all. Its the only way they'll learn.

So if my wife and I share a car, and I get done for drink driving, why crush the car & take it away from her ?

Because, assuming that you know the law on drink driving Noddy, you would probably learn the lesson not to do it in the first place. If you know its illegal, don't do it. But I'm sure that the earholing that you'd get off your wife for being such an idiot in the first place would be even worse than having your car crushed, due to the inconvenience it would cause her.

It's quite simple, there are posters for it and everything, 'Don't drink and drive!'.

So my wife hasn't broken the law, but is penalised ! Will I be sent to prison if Barry gets caught shooting his next door neighbour ??

Now you're just being stupid and missing the point completely. If you comit the crime, your car or your wifes, you suffer the consequences of your actions. Perhaps it should be seen in the same way as allowing someone who has no licence or insurance to drive your car. You comit an offence by enabling that person to comit their own offence. It is quite simple.

No more stupid than your law reforms sound.
The point is the person caught drink driving is punishable, not the car. That is the consequence of the actions, not penalising anyone & everyone connected to the car. It's quite simple really

Usually I'd agree, but as the deterrents clearly don't work, maybe its time for more effective punishments. And if you think they do work, have a look at the number of people in the uk with more (and i men a lot more) than the maximum 12 points on their licences. In some cases more than 50 point. Because they claim hardship if they loose their licence and the courts knuckle under and let them keep it. Over and over and over again. Or should we continue with a system that is clearly broken and does not work. My proposal may be extreme, but i guarantee people would think more before drinking nd driving. And while we're at it, the legl limit should be 0 / zero / zilch / nada. No one should ever get behind the wheel after even one drink. But I'll guess that's unpopular too. But its an opinion. It is still a free country as far as i know.
