Hands-free driving could be legal on UK roads by spring next year. The technology for a car to steer itself and stay in lane, even around curves already exists in some modern cars such as the Tesla or even the QQ, but the law says that drivers must remain alert and ready to take over instantly.
Tesla's so-called "Autopilot" is one well-known example. It is considered "Level Two” on the five defined levels of self-driving cars. The Nissan ProPILOT System is also at present considered to be “Level Two”, but the Drivers Hands have to be on the Wheel. The System functions well but is not obviously the same as real driving - Dave 🧐

The UK Radio quacking on it this am was that ...system behaviour must be at the standard of some driver with a valid licence? Thats a model of someones (group) driving skill ignoring ad hoc slackness. Risk has to be ALARP I'd assume...meaning some damage can be done.

Saying that of course is rather like current common outcomes...so who cares it seems. Get your lawyer primed.

If its anything like my also ad hoc auto brake release...delay/grating on pad lift and off we jerkily go. Electrically, Electronically and Mechanically rather iffy.... :o

So what would be insured, the driver or the car? If , as now, its the driver and he/she says the car was driving hands free.........

Not for me.
Past cars Mercedes B Class, S Class, E Class Estate, E Class Coupe, G Wagen, 260E interspersed with Peugeot 406 and Audi Coupe.
