Was reading yesterday on the BBC that we'll have short haul electric airplanes in 10 years that can carry 120 passengers up to 3-4 hours on battery power!

Electric car growth sparks environmental concerns

Electric cars are not as green as we have been led to believe. And the evidence is piling up: everyone from The Washington Post and 60 Minutes to Amnesty International have exposed the horrendous costs of electric cars to people and the planet.

As the following video explains, unlike regular cars, which run on gasoline-powered engines, electric cars require expensive batteries. Electric car batteries are made from toxic, hard-to-find metals called “rare earths.” These rare earth metals, including lithium and cobalt, are mined primarily in places like China and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where pollution is rampant and thousands of children are forced to work in the mines.

Recent investigations have uncovered the appalling cost of rare earth mining:

The Washington Post: “Worldwide, cobalt demand from the battery sector has tripled in the past five years and is projected to at least double again by 2020, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. This increase has mostly been driven by electric vehicles.”
Amnesty International: “It isn’t only adults who dig for cobalt. So too do children, earning as little as two dollars a day. And they are ripe for exploitation. The United Nations, which is based in the [Democratic Republic of Congo], says that there are at least 40,000 children working in these ‘artisanal mines’ in the southern parts of the country.”
Sky News: “This is one of the thousands of unregulated, unmonitored mines in the DRC. It’s crawling with children, working like modern-day slaves…and wretched weather or not, the rush is on for a mineral the DRC has in great abundance: cobalt, and it’s fast becoming more precious than gold.”
CBS News, 60 Minutes: “Hybrids, in particular use a lot more because they contain electric motors that would not function without rare earths. A Prius has roughly 25 pounds of rare earths…But getting the rare earths out of that rock is nasty business requiring toxic acids and lots of water…China poured billions into the industry, ignoring the consequences. We obtained this video from a freelance cameraman showing the area near Baotou, China’s rare earth capital, where the air, land and water are so saturated with chemical toxins, the Chinese have had to relocate entire villages.”
Study by Arthur D. Little: “…the usage of heavy metals in the manufacture of lithium-ion battery packs for [battery electric vehicles] combined with pollution generated by the US power grid (e.g. tailings from coal power plants) for the In-Use portion of a BEVs lifecycle generate approximately three times the amount of human toxicity compared to [internal combustion engine vehicles].”
Despite the rush to mine cobalt, only 1% of cars in America are electric. Yet many environmentalists want to see millions more electric cars on the road. That would mean more demand for cobalt and lithium, and more human rights abuses that come with mining these foreign metals.

To be sure, you should be free to buy any car you choose. But all energy choices have tradeoffs. Those of us living in more developed countries should stop ignoring the consequences of seemingly flawless alternatives. Electric cars are one of many environmental issues where we need to start having a more honest conversation.

Raefil, thanks for that information that certainly raises questions which need to be considered. The problem is that the e-Powered industry is beginning to takeoff in a big way now. I can now remember seeing a TV documentary on these poor little buggers working for peanuts in the Congo - Dave
