This might be worth taking a look at as it does raise the issues of safety with E-Vehicles. This Model S crashed in Austria and caused a few problems, take a look at the video - Dave ;)

Battery needs cooling before cutting cable / can take 24 hours to put fire out / Fire can re-ignite / Toxic Gases from Battery - Sulphuric Acid, Oxides of Carbon, Nickel, Aluminium, Lithium, Copper, Cobalt / Park for 48 hours to ensure fire is fully out.

Electric cars are the next environmental disaster, and yet those that we let run our countries can't (or won't) see it. Sure, the air around the car when it is on the road is cleaner, but the batteries themselves are packed with toxic chemicals that have to be mined and processed, and then at some point they are going to have to be disposed of.

I watched a video the other day about a Toyota Prius - it was quite an age, but still in fairly good nick, but had knackered batteries - the cost to replace them? £4000!! So, essentially as soon as the car reaches about six years old, it is scrap as soon as the batteries fail as it simply does not make economical sense to replace them. Just crazy.

I have to laugh at the line "a far more reasonable $4.5k" - - reasonable? They must be mad!

I have all but made my mind up that the next car I have will be leased - three years, and hand it back, then get another new one. Brand loyalty doesn't exist because none of the marques show any loyalty to their customers, and the financing of new cars now puts them into the same league as leasing, where essentially someone else is taking the risk on residuals.

The environmental damage caused to make these batteries in such large numbers, is nearly as bad as the damage it's supposed to negate. Electric cars = this generations snake oil.

35 firefighters have worked together just to get rid of the flame, that is really creepy.

Seems to me that these cars should have an emergency on/off switch like a racing car...

Sounds very simple but is most likely not so easy just to cover this problem by installing a switch. There appears to have been fires caused by accidents, heavy crashes / with stationary / parked vehicles and with damages to the underbody / battery pack which Tesla have addressed - Dave ;)

Here is just a short independent US comment :

It does appear that Tesla have a very full documentation available to the Fire / Emergency Services published and available. Attached is an example from Tesla (UK) and also available on our German ADAC (RAC / AA) website. I also use this type of documentation for our QQ here for the Emergency Services using a paper copy in the vehicle and using 2x Bar Codes which are attached to the outside of our QQ and can be scanned (iPad / iPhone) which highlights the QQ critical areas for the Safety of the Services.

This might be of general interest or when and if thinking of buying an E-Car - Dave 😏

I read last week that Porsche / Mercedes were providing support for the Fire Service in Stuttgart to help Extinquish Burning Electric Vehicles. By an Electric Vehicle Fire a Battery Damage can cause temps of 2000C, Battery can explode and burn for days. To solve this the vehicle can be placed in the Container and cooled with water.

The German company Ellermann Eurocon GmbH has developed a fire container, the Red Boxx, especially for the recovery of hybrid and electric vehicles. Since 2017, the company has held several patents on the 23 square metre bathtub, which can be tilted to three sides. If required, the Red Boxx can even retract the cars independently. Some fire brigades, but also vehicle manufacturers, already have this innovation, which costs between 25K and 50K Euros, depending on the model.
