Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi to use Google from 2021

From Engadget/The Financial Times:
This week, the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance, the world's largest maker of cars, signed a deal with Alphabet's Google to be able to use Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Android OS in its vehicles. The new systems will debut starting in 2021.
With a few exceptions, such as Tesla, manufacturer's navigation and other software often leaves much to be desired. However, it also provides valuable customer data, so many auto companies are hesitant to take advantage of Google's Android Auto and rival Apple's CarPlay. This new agreement could help these third-party software options become more standard in cars.
Whether this is for all the territories Nissan sell their vehicles in, or just the USA, remains to be seen!

Why "just the USA"?

Looks like I wont buy another Nissan etc. for at least 3 years then.

Such a pity that it will take so long to integrate tech that has been available for years. Android Auto app was released on 19 March 2015

Let's hope whatever they come up with is better than Android Auto...

An update on the Android Automative OS technology that could soon appear in Nissans, Renaults, Mitsubishis, Volvos and Fiats.

Google and Volvo demonstrated a prototype version of the OS technology earlier this week.

Android Automotive, on the other hand, can be used without a smartphone. More critically, it can control core functions of the vehicle — like changing in-car temperature and adjusting steering, braking, and other key mechanical features — all from the center system and via voice, thanks to Google Assistant.

Android Auto itself is due to be upgraded this summer. Am not sure whether cars with existing versions need any changes or the changes are only needed on the mobile phone they connect to.

Surely the latter?

As far as I’m aware, it’s the software on the phone (both Android and iOS) that’s updated which then mirrors content to the car’s ICE system. I don’t think anything needs updating in the car 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks Sandgrounder, that certainly makes the most sense.
