Just an update on this New Idea from ZF Germany. Exterior airbags have been touted as a potential safety feature for some years, but automotive parts manufacturer ZF Friedrichshafen (ZF), based in south-west Germany, has now produced a ready-to-use version for car makers - Dave

Unlike interior airbags which rely on the force of impact to deploy, exterior airbags have to be 'deployed immediately prior to a collision' to provide a buffer effect, said ZF. The side airbag module is located in the seat of the car and attached to the seat frame

ZF Germany have developed a prototype Side Impact Airbag which uses an external side airbag deployed milliseconds before a collision. It provides an additional lateral crumple zone, which can help save lives and reduce occupant injury severity by up to 40 percent. To make this possible, ZF has networked the airbags to the vehicle’s sensor systems which determines if a crash is imminent and decide whether or not to deploy the airbag. These types of collisions are among the most dangerous type of road traffic accidents of which nearly a third of all occupant fatalities are on German roads.
