Nissan is considering scaling back production shifts at its major plant in Sunderland threatening 400 jobs in the North East, according to reports from Sky News. The assembly line building Qashqais - the UK's long-standing best-selling SUV - and Leaf electric cars may have its number of daily shifts reduced to two from three, the news source claimed.

Car sales are down considerably because of EU laws affecting diesels. If people don't buy the cars then the workforce will reduce. It has happened at Nissan Sunderland before. It isn't new. In 1989 the 17 year old most modern covered in shipbuilding factory in Europe was closed down because there was no more work. 2000 lost their jobs with more than 6000 related jobs. The government simply said that there was Nissan Car factory just a few miles away and that is where the future lay. Since Japan no longer needs an easy way into Europe because of their recent new trade deal then I think people should be prepared for the Sunderland factory to eventually relocate back to Japan.
