This is a group with over 80 Companies from Car Manufacturers to Part Suppliers. Some of the Companies are Bosch, Faurecia, Panasonic, Google, Apple, Samsung and BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, PSA, Toyota and VW. The Mirror Link System coupling Smart Phones to Cars is already in use in millions of vehicles. BMW offer this System for€80 per year in new models, Mercedes around €120 although higher specification extras are required hence increased prices. The next phase 2 in 2019 should be cheaper, VW starts inSept 2019 in the Passat, Hyundai in the Sonata (i40), PSA in the DS3 SUV and in 2020 a System from Bosch for Trucks.
The Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) is a cross-industry organization advancing global technologies for smartphone-to-car connectivity solutions. CCC is developing Digital Key, an exciting new open standard to allow smart devices, like smartphones to act as a vehicle key. Digital Key will let drivers lock and unlock their cars, and even let them start the engine and share access to friends or valets, using their phones.
I followed up on this information after reading that in 2008 Nissan & Sharp in Tokyo showed a Prototype of an iPhone system and it went on to this :
