This is something I would not normally Post about but this just goes to show what this type of “News” can do to change attitudes. Last year in Germany SUV sales reached the Million Mark. - Dave
It would be interesting to read your comments !

I am not sure how many of you actually have read (it seems to have attracted a lot of attention) about this Tragic Crash in Berlin last week where 4 people were killed after a driver of a Porsche Macan SUV lost control (reason unknown at present) of his vehicle and ploughed into some pedestrians.
This accident has certainly raised all sorts of questions in Germany this week (News / Political / TV Discussions / IAA Frankfurt Show Demonstrations, Greenpeace, Green Party etc...) and it has gone completely Haywire here with the Question of Banning “SUV’s” especially in City Centers and raising petrol taxes...
This SUV terminology IMHO covers a wide scope of vehicles from for example the smaller SUZUKI Ignis (Gloucester) / QQ’s (Our mid size) and then come the Big Boys (Audi / VW / Mercedes / Porsche etc) all with different specifications such as engine size, PS, weight, Speed etc.... but all referred to as SUV’s.

Most of the “SUV’s” IMHO are purchased for convenience, easy access (Oldies), high seating position, better visual aspects, space in some respects, school run, but in general our type of vehicle is just an upgraded or visually changed Mid Range Car.
It will be interesting to see the outcome of the Tragic accident here and if in fact changes are implemented here or wider. This accident and the criticisms have happened just when the IAA Frankfurt Show is showing the wave of e-Cars now available or in the future.

Clearly a ridiculous knee-jerk reaction. So let's ban all vans too since they're the favoured "weapon" of some people.

BTW the n-tv.de link comes up as "Unfortunately, this video is not available. Reason could be your current location. However, we are pleased to inform you as a reader informative and entertaining on de" after translation.

The next time (hopefully there will not be a next time) a 'normal vehicle' gets out of control, are they going to ban that type of vehicle as well? Unfortunately, each day people are killed in traffic accidents. If the autorities are consistent, they may just as well ban all vehicles from driving within city limits......

Technically I believe an "SUV" is described as a 4x4 and a "Crossover" as a 4x2. A Nissan Qashqai can be either - a Suzuki Ignis can be either.

You couldn't ban an SUV and not ban it's Crossover brother. But then reactions rarely base themselves on logic.

This subject of SUV’s appears to be Big News at the present time and is naturally being used to raise all the issues related to CO2 Pollution. At present there is a big Push on Pollution / Politics / Banning of the Diesels in Cities / VW & Bosch have again been accused of playing with Euro 6 autos / Hardware Diesel Upgrades / at the IAA Frankfurt Show which is basically only German Manufacturers where E-Cars are being presented. All this can and will create Job Losses for the Manufacturers and their Suppliers putting pressure on Government. Naturally the Green Party Politicians and Greenpeace are jumping on this and also Demonstrating, the IAA Show today was got at.

RRR, naturally comment understood.
Regarding the next time unfortunately these tragic accidents happen on a daily basis ! On virtually a daily basis here in the City (guaranteed in the UK also) there are accidents and serious ones that also occur on the Autobahns with Trucks which mostly Tail End a Traffic Jam or the Coaches whose Drivers (Flexibus - cheap European Buses) working for contractors at minimal wages and not keeping to the Laws related to Rest, driving unsafe vehicles also causing many tragic deaths.
The Polizei and the Zoll (Customs) have a hard job checking these vehicles daily and what they find is horrific related to unsafe loads, tires, brakes, rust etc ... all Trucks usually are Eastern Country based. These vehicles are seized, locked in compounds and not allowed to be driven until Safe, plus the Big Driver Fines. You these happenings in the News / TV daily and then it is gone it is just like a daily occurrence it comes and goes unfortunately.

Tragically these happenings are part of daily life and some solution needs to be found and put in place, but what and how - Dave 🧐

I'd class an SUV as largely another van type with windows. White van mans vehicles are not exactly low performance either even with bricks and cement mixers loaded.

As soon as Greenpeace got in this...I kinda switched off fast. I saw some horrific crashes in Europe/Germany when I spent 7 military years (60s/70s) there and Porsche/Merc starred in a good few...big time. Drivers mostly and likely some with single catastrophic mechanical failures.

Somewhere there the Beetle got slagged in the US about fuel tank up front...don't think it was green hippy types though.

We get incidents in Central London with loonies (drunk/drugged) and muscle cars. Don't think theres been a big pedestrian wipe out like Berlin unless someone is on a terrorist attack....drugged etc or mentally gone?

There have been drunk foreign truck drivers picked up here Dave. Stats unknown...have to wait for a BBC TV police prog to show up again.

Speed limits: There is a bunch of stats for head on collision speeds which may point to a limit of 25mph on non motorways. Certainly speed limits are dropping here and there around my patch...what was 60mph is now 50mph for one. Add speed bumps everywhere.

I understand that France allows the driving of half ton SMART type cars with no driving licence at speed max 28mph on road. Was on the Frankfurt/Stuttgart shows 2019...I think? Its an issue around those stupid battery scooters that appeared on UK pavements as well.

Driving Aids: There is a distinct trade off here. Is damage greater, less or same as compared to non aided. I am at the moment somewhat cynical of such systems but suspect damage will be less. It has to be really.

It still remains in the hands of "the nut at the end of the wheel".

Colin, Thanks for your comments. These French Vehicles as you stated can be driven without a Driving License, here there are Disabled Vehicles that can also be used such as this Canta - Dave 😏

This is I believe the one you have mentioned :

And then there is this Chic one :
The two-seat hatchback known as VSP, or Voiture Sans Permis, which literally means a "car without license.

This is not related thank god to accidents. It just goes to show how the “News” comes and goes as the “SUV” Criticisms / Bans here have just dropped away. Now the rant in the UK is about people purchasing too many SUV’s rather than Electric - Dave 🤨

The continued rise of big 4x4 models 'makes a mockery of UK policy efforts' to only have electric cars on the road by 2050, the UK Energy Research Centre concludes.

For every electric car there are 37 new SUVs purchased : https://mol.im/a/7773001

Just read a report here that from Jan until Nov 19 this year 1,03 Mio SUV’s were purchased that is 18% more as in 2018. This represents 31% of the total vehicles purchased here and the belief is that by 2025 the figure will be 50% - Dave 😉
