Do ‘green’ buses pass the performance test?

Post by calnorth » Sun Feb 16, 2020 10:17 am

Pros and Cons globally..the race to do it. Councils and Govt buy in - UK...in a rush.

"And this is just for today’s “renewable, sustainable, ethical, Earth-friendly, green” technologies. Just imagine what we are likely to see if China, California, New York, Europe and countless other places start mandating a fossil-fuel-free future – and then shut down nuclear power, to boot. Where will we get all the raw materials? Where will we put all the wind turbines, solar panels, batteries and transmission lines?"

Colin, London I believe already have the biggest fleet of E-Buses made partially by BYD China. Take a read below of the problems related to Berlin’s E-Bus experience interesting - Dave 😁
The latest routes to go electric are built by two manufacturers, Leeds-based Optare and the British-Chinese partnership of BYD and Alexander Dennis Limited. Transforming all of London's iconic red buses to green, zero-emission vehicles, will involve more than one type of power source.

I was told that a lot of them are hybrids and now there is a mix of battery and hydrogen. What with ambulances thundering about constantly and all these busses am pleased not to have to go there anymore. Add the totally rammed train services(?)...the same, if not worse than 20 odd years back.

Add this policing game in and the constant externally funded protesting:

Here is an update on the situation here in Berlin with the BVG E-Buses as it appears now they are really going for it with the new E-Buses / Charging & Rapid Charging Stations with the Pantograph Charging System at Terminal Stops - Dave 🙂

“The Berlin Transport Authority (BVG – Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe) is taking electric mobility to a new level with the “E-MetroBus” project. With the Solaris Urbino 18 electric, the first fully-electric articulated bus has recently joined Germany's largest city bus fleet. 16 more will follow in the coming weeks.
As with the vehicles of the existing articulated bus fleet, the new additions are 18 metres long and offer space for 99 passengers. A noticeable difference is made by the virtually noiseless electric drive. For the first time in Berlin, the new vehicles will be charged within minutes by means of a pantograph at the terminal stops. The rapid charging columns required for this are supplied by Siemens.”

“Ekoenegetyka is supplying Berlin with no less than 130 charging stations for electric buses. Each station will deliver 150 kW through plug-in connection. The Polish supplier is then involved in BVG’s ambitious project of transition to zero emission vehicles. By 2021, some 225 e-buses are expected to hit Berlin’s streets. The first eCitaro has been presented in early 2020, (it’s part of a 15 units order) and further 90 e-buses are coming from Solaris with deliveries from spring 2020. An order that follows the 15 units ordered in 2018 and the articulated bus batch (15 units as well) bought in March 2019.”

Better double up ...for when we get barred from owning cars. And somebody has seriously cornered battery materials:

TfL is close to bust what with Lockdown(s) and ticket evasion/fraud. A Mayor that has mental issues.
