While checking my car yesterday, I noticed the oil was way too low.
It's a 66 plate Qashqai petrol 1.2 litre.
What oil do I need?
I have a bottle that is 5w/40 - I'm 99.99% sure this is the one I need.
It's left over from the service last done - or maybe it's from something else!!?
Just wanted to be sure.
Thanks.

Mrmatrix, our QQ 1,2L was feed this stuff by our Nissan Dealer for 5 Years, in fact I still have a 1L Container that was a spare when the frighteners came on the engine problems, but never needed it πŸ™ - Dave πŸ˜‰
I double checked the Nissan Service Docs All state here 5W40

Dave, thanks for confirming.
I called up my local Nissan.
After looking up the details, they proudly confirmed and told me that the correct oil was: 5W30.
I told them that was odd, as the oil I had left from the last service by the mechanic was 5W40 - I was calling just to make sure.
He quickly and promptly said 5W40 was what their mechanics use on the garage floor + that 5W30 and 5W40 where interchangeable.

Thoughts ran around in my head thinking: you sound like a car salesman who is ready to sell his gran for a fiver.
(The guy whom I spoke to wasn't a salesman, he was one of the technicians.)
Disappointed to get such shoddy advice.
Even if what he says is true, it was the Del Boy mannerism in which it was all said that put me off.

Mrmatrix, your story rings a Bell this was exactly the same sort of story we had on the J11A QQ when questioned why 5W40 was in. As I mentioned it ran for 5 years without problems (Juke & Note also). Now I have just checked our J11B Service Book & Receipts they both State 5W30, but this is now the new 1,3L engine - Dave πŸ˜‹

I do agree that 5W30 and 5W40 are interchangeable as the difference is minimal unless you are using your car for racing.
I did use both on my previous car and never felt any difference ( Vauxhall VVT engine is very sensible to oil qualities ).
I'll be changing my oil in the next 2-3 months and I think I'll go for 5W40 as it is having higher viscosity when hot, so I believe it's good for engines using tappets with variable valve systems.

In your situation mixing 5W30 with 5W40 is acceptable when used to top up, one way or another...

Guys, thanks for the replies.
Reassured by your words - wish I could say the same for the Nissan dealer.

EDIT: I added 1 litre of oil... but the dipstick isn't showing anything.
Do I need to drive around first?
(This is the first time I've ever topped up oil!)

5W40 oil is finished.
I have 5W30 that I used on my Toyota Prius.
Given the previous mentioned... am I OK to use the 5W30 to top up if needed?
(DOH: sounds obvious - answer already given, I know. Apologies... newbie here.)
