OK Noddy1875 - but I still maintain there's no point in having it "serviced" - especially at the cost of £99!

An air con "service" basically amounts to connecting the car up to a machine which vacuums out your refrigerant, then pumps it back in again topping up to the max level, and then running it with the aforementioned £10 bombs you can get at Halfords.

If your refrigerant is low, then you're getting value for money as it's expensive. If it's only been 2 years since your last service and its nearly full, then you are only paying for a fraction of the gas.

I think that's how they can get away with charging only £99 for the more expensive gas it uses these days. Mr X comes in with his gas 90% full and is only getting £20 worth, Mr Y comes in whose car is 5 years old and is down to 30%, and is getting £140 worth. But both have paid £99. Hence it's in their own best interests to recommend you have an air con service every 2 years.

Best way to service your AC is to make sure you never, ever, turn off the AC button as the gas contains oils which lubricate the seals from the inside. Don't run your AC and they dry out causing minute leaks.

It would be interesting to see that described somewhere - I didn't have it done on my Qashqai but when offered it on my Skodas it didin't seem to involve that much work, merely the "external" clean of the system which you can easily do yourself.

What would an "external clean" have to do with a sealed system ???

It's cleaning the bits the air passes through not the fluid...

That's replaced at every annual service so why replace it twice? Costs £40 as part of the service...
