The rear pads can be done on a Quashqai J11 with electric handbrake manually without diagnostic or special tools.

The diagnostic tool is used to retract the piston with ease but the tools can be expensive and used infrequently so may not provide the DIYer value for money. Using a piston compression/windback tool can apply excessive pressure to the handbrake thread if not done properly. Also the Quashqia J11 has a 3 point piston face which is not common in most compression windback tool kits.

Most forums and online videos show the J10 so here is a solution that will work easily for the average DIYer with a J11.

Please follow this process:

1. Disable the handbrake. Simply press the button down with the ignition on (engine not running)
2. Remove the rear top and bottom caliper bolts (13mm)
3. Slide out the pads from the caliper holder.
4. From the back of the caliper remove the handbrake actuator/motor. This is the plastic box connected to the back of the caliper. There are 2 small torx bolts holding it on.
5. Once the actuator is removed you will see a polished plate with a hole on the back of the caliper. Inside the hole is a number of teeth that the actuator uses to rotate the piston thread thus pushing/retracting the piston.
6. Facing the polished plate rotate a torx bit in the hole by hand anticlockwise to retract the inner thread (this should move freely so don't use any tools). You should see the piston move slightly. Once fully retracted you can push the piston back by hand.
7. Refit the actuator bolts ensuring the small lug on the actuator sits in between the teeth. Do not force this flush with the bolts. Wiggle it flush first.
8. Refit the caliper with the 13mm bolts.
9. Pump the brake with the engine off first.
10. Start the engine with the handbrake off and pump the brake.
11. Engage and disengage the handbrake a few times to allow it to auto adjust.

Hope this helps.
