Mikey, as Noddy has mentioned you most probably need to take a look at Springs or Complete Shock Absorbers & Springs. If you go on the web they are everywhere Eibach for example is one of the more well known Companies for Springs and they pop up everywhere - Amazon, eBay etc..... Hope this helps you Dave

Hi Mikey
I know what you mean about the gap, it does look a little big. Fitting higher profile tyres (i.e. 50 or 55) will increase the overall diameter and fill up the gap. However, you mustn't do this because it will alter the cars gearing, render the speed and distance measured inaccurate and probably upset many other things! I suppose you could lower the suspension but again I would get advice about this from a specialist.
I have 19" wheels on my new Qashqai and am thinking of ways of changing these for 18" or even 17" because the ride is definately much harder than the car I drove during the test drive which I think had 17"

Check out this site.
Increasing wheel inch and decreasing sidewall will get you somewhere near enough 9 times out of 10.

Also if your looking at suspension upgrades.
Just changing springs usually makes ride overly firm.
Changing for a full set generally gives a firm improved performance but doesn't make it like driving a 17 year olds slammed vauxhall nova.
Cheap coilovers are a step up from spring only but tend to not last too long.
Ultimate I'd say on an suv is an air setup.
If I could persuade my wife I'd go air and 22s lol. Not gonna happen though.

Mikey1958:
Essentially you shouldn't do it for several reasons:
1. Putting larger diameter tyres on (which is essentially what you're wanting to do?) will dent the performance.
2. Putting larger diameter tyres on will alter the speedometer reading - possibly into illegal territory. (I hate to think how complicated recalibration might be on a modern car)
3. Putting larger diameter tyres on may result in rubbing in the wheelarches or on other components when on full lock.

Interestingly the tyres you already have appear to be non-standard. The brochure I'm looking at suggests 215/55R18

Your tyres are already larger than standard - looks like someone's already done what you're trying to do again!

Thanks gloucester for introducing this very interesting tyre size tool
Strangely enough, after messing around with it I find my results are different to yours! I keep wondering if I have done something wrong and would value your opinion. According to the results I get it seems to me that Mikey1958's tyre diameter appears to be quite a bit smaller than it should be which will give him the big gap he describes:-

Apologies everyone - I can't replicate where I went wrong - but if you look at the image I posted it's showing 15" wheels for some reason. Can't work out why that happened.

So I'll try again

Your tyres are smaller than standard - but why is not clear.
Perhaps:
A] someone got cheap tyres in the wrong size
B] someone was trying to improve acceleration at the expense of top speed, economy, and noise at cruising speed.
So...................................
I would be sensible to go back to the recommended size - it will improve the appearance (by 16.5mm), economy and cruising noise, but dent outright acceleration slightly.
