It appears that the Old Handbrake System is gradually being phased out in favour of Automatic Systems. With these systems as we know there is a simple switch or push-button engage a pair of small motors connected to the rear brakes and a symbol on the dashboard tells the driver when they are applied. Most electronic handbrakes disengage automatically when drivers pull away and often offer an automatic hill-start assist function as an additional safety benefit. They cannot be activated on the move.

The article says "They cannot be activated on the move, spelling the end of reckless, Starsky and Hutch-style handbrake turns." - well the Qashqai's can.
If the electric parking brake must be applied
while driving in an emergency, pull up and
hold the parking brake switch. When you release
the parking brake switch, the parking
brake will be released.
While pulling up the electric parking brake
switch while driving, the parking brake is applied
and a chime sounds.

Gloucester, correct in the QQ this can be done the article was not specific to QQ. But I would assume in your younger days the “Hand Brake” turn was done in for example a Mini and pulling on a long Lever which is a little different to looking for, pulling and releasing this little Lever / Button.
Nissan Manual J11 : When you had your QQ did you ever try pulling the Auto Hand Brake “On” on the move at low speeds. I rarely use this Brake when driving and sometimes the wife mentions “Your Rolling” then I pull it “On” and just at a few mph it is a very abrupt Stop hence my continued headaches from the wife - Dave

Yes I did - when in traffic queues and it started rolling along - and yes it was VERY abrupt.
I didn't try it at speed - I suspect it would just lock the wheels...
I prefer the system as our office Golf where it comes on every time you're stopped not just when you turn the engine off.

That's basically how the new auto hold works in the QQ.gloucester wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2019 6:39 pm I prefer the system as our office Golf where it comes on every time you're stopped not just when you turn the engine off.

Gloucester, I know that even at Rolling Speed the Body “Jerk” was pretty intensive.

Yep, that's the one, and it is really good and smoother to pull away under vs the full handbrake.

In twenty years time you'll be saying:
"I preferred the old system whereby you had a steering wheel and were able to actually drive the car yourself!"
