Changing Tekna 19" diamond cut wheel

Post by da644 » Tue Jan 21, 2020 2:05 pm

I have a Qashqai Tekna with 19" diamond-cut alloy wheels on it and I'm so fed up with them. You only have to look at a kerb and it knocks chunks out of them and I've had three punctures on the nearside front now in 1.5 years and two different tyre places have told me this is a common issue with these wheels on the Qashqai.

I'm thinking of replacing them with some 17" alloys, as I believe that is what it would have come with if it wasn't the Tekna, is that correct? Are there any possible issues with changing them that I should be aware of? Also, any recommendations on places to get new wheels for a reasonable price? I'm not particularly fussed about how they look as anything is going to look better than the wheels on it right now.

Thanks.

Is it your current tyres at fault? Ours came with Michelins, which seem to do a reasonable job of protecting the rim.

Punctures, not sure how the wheels are at fault for that?

N-Connecta spec comes with 18" wheels, that are 2-tone painted, not diamond cut, so they hay be an option.....

da644, are you sure it is the 19” wheels causing all the problems or the way the QQ is driven. Our QQ Tekna was 5 years old had 19” Diamond Cut Alloys and never had any damage or punctures. The problem is the parking alongside Kerbs and there is a Camera that can be used to prevent Kerb Contact and Damage. The new QQ in the Summer wil then have the “WIND” 19” Alloys with as mentioned by phatboy Michelins to try to eliminate the Kerb problem. At present we have 17” Winter Alloys from Giacuzzo - Dave

The diamond-cut alloys are completely flat with the tyre so the slightest time you go near a kerb the alloy makes contact with the kerb whereas with a more "normal" alloy the tyre protrudes out from the alloy as you can see in the picture above. I'm not sure about the punctures either, but the fact two different tyre places have told me the same thing, without prompting, it sounded like it might be some sort of design issue. The 19" tyres just don't seem particularly robust and I've had various different brands and price levels from super expensive Michelin's to an "economy" one when that is all they had in stock and I needed it done there and then. The original tyres it came with new were probably the worst, I think they were Continentals and it just ate them, they only last about 10,000 miles on the front, but it was an ex-demo (4 months) when I got it, and I'm not sure if it had been driven badly by the salesperson at the garage who used it. This is the first car in 25 years of driving that I've ever had so many issues with tyres on and I certainly do not drive it crazy or anything. In the 4 years I've had it, I think I've had to replace 8 tyres, so basically two whole sets plus the 4 it came with, so 12 total tyres. It has done just over 50,000 miles, which that seems like a lot to me, plus the size it takes are so expensive. The reason I'm looking into this now is because at the MOT recently they advised the two offside tyres need changing.

The Michelins @daveberlin has shown above are exactly what are on my Tekna, and they do provide decent wheel protection, you can see in his picture that they stick out more than the wheel. Do you have a different profile or something? If they came with the wrong ones, tyre places will just keep changing like for like I expect.

If, as you say, the tyre are flat with the edge of the wheel, do you have the correct size tyres fitted? But, I will say on my previous car I had 17" alloys and over the course of 8 years had to have the wheels repaired where they had cracked 3 times and in the end replaced them as I think they were becoming dangerous with all the welding. Personally I don't think our UK roads are not good enough for such large wheels with elastic bands as tyres, but we the motorist will carry on paying.

Just as a comparison on this Tyre Problem - Dave 😏

This was the other option on the QQ J11B Tekna + but with again Michelin’s and overhang :

Welcome to this forum.

I never kerbed my alloys in over two years of ownership and had no punctures either.

I did have to replace the tyres owing to normal wear and went for Dunlop with integral rim protectors.

You can fit 16" steels or 17", 18" or 19" alloys without a problem.

Best to get secondhand Qashqai wheels on eBay - others would need declaring for insurance.

Agree with diamond cut wheels and damage but from wire worm, dealevswapped under warranty 3 of the 4 wheels but not happy that come trade in the value will be docked.... eldest son has a 150bhp Leon with “standard 17”alloys, recently refurbished 2 After a truck forced him onto a kerb at a very reasonable cost. Had a thrumming which he was worried was the dual mass flywheel but it turned out to be the tyre. near side rear, original to his 2016 38k car as oval. Replaced with Michelin primacy and wow, went to Northallerton and back today from Goole with him and sooo. Sooo quiet and at 160 for the pair great price. I’ve committed to buying decent tyres @t next replacement but either £90 for cheapie or £170 for decent is hard to currently swallow. Even my Range Rover I buybdecent tyres for £105 each. So smaller diameter wheels are of interest to me

 Not sure you can blame the wheels and tyres for kerbing.
Yes some tyres offer better protection than others but it’s us the ‘driver’ who has control!
