Well, we finally got the driver's side combo light off! He installed the LCD light and I started the car and turned on the lights. We had running lights. I depressed the brake - no change in the driver's side, but the passenger's side glowed brightly. He took the LCD out and revered the bulb and we started again - light for the running light and, when I applied the brake, it was working as it should.

However, the results were somewhat disappointing. The LCD didn't look any brighter than the halogen on the other side in either mode - running light or brake light. Since the passenger's side is so damn difficult to remove, we're going to leave it as is until the weather warms up a bit. On the driver's side, Rob applied a modest amount of lube to the front grove and the pins. The housing went back on fairly easily and he was able to remove it without much pulling. If I ever get around to replacing the turn signal bulb, it might not be such a task. Now to deal with the passenger's side!
