Please can anyone advise if it is safe to use a smart battery charger with all battery terminals connected on my N connecta auto. 2020.
Is there any danger of damage to electronics etc.
Thanks.

Hi Dave Thanks for your help, I have viewed the posts in the "Search Area" but still not 100% sure it is safe to charge in situ.
I have been trying to determine the construction of the battery as it seems it is different to the old lead acid type but no success

Its a contentious issue really and relates to vehicle and personal safety. Modern vehicles are littered with electronic modules and fault detection within such modules.

Nobody can be 100% sure about the behaviour of any battery under charge. Military training tells me to remove the battery and place in a protected charging area...which is something any commercial garage must have. I can't do that now.

Charging raises risks whether the battery is Lead Acid or any other chemical combination. Explosion/Fire/Leakage/Gas etc and anywhere/anytime.

I don't know what your "Smart" charger is exactly. I suspect it operates from 230v mains so what do the instructions tell you?

My way out of this "to do or not to do" thing is: (Lockdown or otherwise)

I drive to the supermarket for essentials weekly and do that via a 25 mile sweep and not using STOP/START.

I check the battery volts once a week in winter to ensure it has not dropped below 12v. If its near that I'm off on the 25 mile sweep again.

I won't recommend charging in vehicle.

This is exactly what I was about to post (although I only did 15 miles going to do the essential shop yesterday.

UPDATE:

Had car parked up for 7 days in deep shade all day..no starting at all. Night temps around -3 deg C. Checked volts in Service Menu today...11.97v

Not entirely accurate and likely around +/- 5%. Should start ok and is a 1yr old Varta AGM Batt.

Hope that helps.

Thanks to all for your help. It would appear that after contacting two Nissan showrooms they do indeed trickle charge the cars without removing battery leads between demonstrations to customers.
I have tried to access the service menu on my car using the instructions on an earlier post using U tube but my system seems to be a later version.
I would like to check the battery voltage from time to time. Can anyone help with how to access this menu on a 2020 model.

The sole hidden menu I have found is basically entered in the same manner as before. Hold the Menu button and wiggle the right control knob from side to side.

That said, there isn't half as much info there as there used to be.
