If you take a read of all the Facts available on this subject in „Search“ I think you will come up with the answer - NO !. The systems, gases, equipment are all different and the old gas R123a is being phased out worldwide. I agree the old gas is cheaper but this is all part of owning a modern vehicle things change and it costs to maintain, there is no other way out - I hope this helps Dave :)

Dave, I wonder if Mercedes are now using, as they were refusing to, citing safety
eg new gas is far more flammable, apart from being expensive, more likely to leak.

Hopefully gas price will come down eventually, and more garages/ air con specialists will offer than now,
which also helps keep price up :(

Gel, I posted this article end of last year to a similar question which seems to cover your point, MB are using the new R1234yf and are also developing a CO2 System. The gas is still inflammable (Although all the information came mainly from Germany) and when you see the videos it will make you aware of what could happen (all this information has also been posted on). The price was also covered recently as the older Gas is being phased out (less availability and higher price) and perhaps the new Gas price will drop but we are in the Hands of I believe 2 US Suppliers, so what can we expect a price hike ? - Dave :)
