Many thanks for all the advice on this thread, no more mouse squeaks for me either now. PIAA slender twin horns fitted in nicely, just!

Hi All,

I'd completely forgotten about this thread until the recent reply, as not had to honk anyone in a while and just been putting it off in case I mess it up.

For those that have done it, is there a really simple option where it is literally:

1-remove the cover
2-remove old horn,
3-replace with new horn in exact same way, using only the fittings and cables that are provided form new horn or from existing horn

Looking at a few of the guides and photos posted by others, most seem to involve making a custom mount, or changing cables, or buying extra bits, and also difficulty in finding space.

Most have said it is simple however it doesn't sound that simple to me (with no experience) so I'm looking for a "plug & play" option where it is a literal quick swap.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

When fitting my twin horns i could have literally just stopped at one and just swapped it as is for the current one. That would have required nothing more than unplug, swap, replug. Its only adding a second horn that introduces the need for extra wiring work and even that was simple. The only real challenge was the mount. If I had stopped at 1, it would have been the 400hz one.

Thanks.

Are these the ones you got?

How does it sound with one?

And what did you have to buy separately for the 2nd one?

They're the ones... It sounded a lot louder with a just one but more 'powerful/impactful' when the 2nd one was added. All it needed to get the 2nd working too was the wiring connections seen here on an earlier post. Ie 4 bits of electrical cable and the connectors for the ends.

Look at the pictures on pages 4 and 7 - I followed those.

Page 4 picture is the one that shows it in its simplest form.

Thanks again.

I think I'll take the plunge then and give it a go, at least doing 1 horn and see where it goes from there.

Regarding the pictures of the cables, I believe I found the ones you were referring to on page 4... did you buy them like that or do you have to cut them and re-attach?

Also, I downloaded a PDF instruction file from earlier somewhere in the thread. Filename was 906 for some reason and titled 'PIAA SPORTS CAR HORN - Installation instructions'.

Is installation C (Single Factory horn with single wire plug) the correct one?

I've never crimped or spliced wires before - do you need special tools or just regular tools like pliers, scissors, screwdrivers? (stuff in a standard cheap supermarket toolbox).

Ignore the Pdf, it's misleading, the image on page 4 was 100% OK, I made the wires up myself, using a cheap crimping set from ebay.

Good luck!

Out of curiosity, why is the pdf misleading? It seems to me that twin horns will draw more current than the single OEM squeaker, so it makes sense to me to add a relay and a dedicated power route as shown in the pdf (installation type D). That's why I was lazy and replaced the single horn with a better (Volvo low tone) single horn! ;)

Option C, the pictures didn't match the words, Option D, the words looked OK but the picture inferred the need for a relay which others on here said wasn't needed. FYI - I'm no electrician but was quite happy to follow an already proven route.

Thanks Pandjh, I will probably order the horn, then if necessary take it with me to Halfords to find appropriate cables/plug/crimpers.
