What exact model type do you have? you can include in your forum signature
alongside model year/ engine type/ your location etc;
if you have a TEKNA like me, the whole assembly has to be replaced.
Try searching E Bay or an on line breaker for a 2nd hand spare.

If I understand the OP correctly he's saying that the bulb from the non functioning side lit fine when transferred to the other side. As it's a halogen unit the cabling to the bulb comes from the wiring loom so changing the headlamp unit will make no difference whatsoever, apart from a big hole in the bank account. Can someone help with the wiring diagram for the lighting system?

It could be as simple as a corroded earth

Sorry for not including the full info. the Qashqai is 63 plate Tekna 2.0 crdi auto. It's the wife's car and has been standing a while on occasions which warranted the battery to be charged/topped up. Would this have had a detrimental effect on the light's electronics?. Took it to the garage, they couldn't figure it, hence the possible costs for a new full light assembly. However, after a long run the light came back on (cancelled the replacement) but now off again.
Gel: Thanks for the info.
Bob d: Could it be the ballast unit sited under the headlamp unit?
gloucester: I'll try WD40 and also look for the possible corroded earth.

If its halogen, then it does not need a ballast. Balast if for HID lights.
Sounds like you have a bad earth/connection somewhere.

You put the bulb that did not work in the other side and it worked, Have you tried putting the working bulb in the side where it stopped working to see if it comes on.
You also mention it came on after a drive and went back out.
It could be the bulb has blown but when you move it the tungsten filament within the glass touch each other the heat bonds them and it comes back on for a short time, This is possible and can be very confusing as it makes you think bulb has not blown because it just worked.
Try a different bulb in the lamp that is not working to determine if it is the bulb.
Usually the Bulb starts going pink before it goes
Get some one to turn lights on while you watch the headlights from front of car if you get a flicker for a split second it will be the ballast
if it is not the bulb you could do with a tester to see if you have power to the bulb holder and work away from bulb holder to see if you can find the short.
As the car has been stood it could be simple rust build up on a connection some where.
If one side sometimes doesn't turn on it could be caused by a bad bulb, HID ballast or wiring
To help identify which component is defective follow these steps.
Swap the ignitors to opposing sides . If the problem is reversed, you might have a bad ignitor.
This step will check if you have a bad ignitor. The ignitor is the black rectangular box that is plugged between the ballast and the bulbs. To perform this test, please swap your ignitors to opposing sides and see what happens.
Swap the HID ballasts to opposing sides. If the problem is reversed, you might have a bad ballast.
This step will check if you have a bad HID ballast . The HID ballasts are the two metal boxes that came with your kit.
To perform this test, please swap your HID ballast to opposing sides and note what happens to your kit.

If none of the above helps, check for loose connections.

Terry64,
Had a look today, removed the nearside, proposing to change them for a check, but could not remove the offside bulb. Replaced the nearside and made sure that the connecting pin was in the correct way and the damn thing worked.
The connector has 4 pins with pin #2 missing, so it should only be connected one way.
However, this does not fix the problem of why the damn thing went out in the first place.
Keeping a close eye on it from now on.
Thanks for all the feedback from everyone.
