Doesn't the handbook explain things? Normally if you move the lever to "+" and release it changes up a gear and moving it towards "-" drops it down a gear. You may still retain the kickdown facility - check the manual

Russell, I bought the QQ with 7 Speed DCT Gearbox to get away from the older Manual Box, due to I suppose Age or just Laziness. I find this DCT Box very nice and very smooth so I use it most of the time. I use the “Manual” let’s say now and again (Lidl Run when there is Toilet Paper ) and it is basically similar to as Gloucester mentioned.
Nudge the Lever to the Left (#1) accelerate just like normal then just push (no effort required) the lever forward (+) Up to (#7) or what you need, then backwards (-). You get used to the motor Revs and sound when and where to change and there is an indicator informing you of which gear you are in right in front of you.
If you are worried just take it out on a quite road and play around with it to give you some confidence, it’s basically like normal driving except forgetting your clutch foot, again nice and impressive. As Gloucester mentioned take a look in your Manual.
Best of Luck give it a Go - Dave

I had such a gearbox in my Freelander V6 (LOVELY car!) and really only used the manual override for dropping a gear or two going down steep hills to avoid using the brakes. For acceleration it's usually easier to just use kickdown.
