Hi Guys
My first post, thought i better ask the pros.
I own a 2014 Qashqai, i dont drive it often and so the battery goes flat often. In the manual it says that if you leave the car parked for 30 days then its best to disconnect the negative on the battery.
I disconnected the negative, it sat for three days. After three days, I connected the negative back i lost my settings but did not have to re enter the radio code. Also the strangest thing, when the car started, the clock was wrong (as expected) but then after a few seconds the clock reset itself to the correct time!
How can this happen if I disconnected the negative on the battery? I also noticed a small battery discharge as well.
Im thinking is it better to disconnect the positive instead of the negative? It’s obviously still getting power.

Any comments welcome
Thanks guys.

You can disconnect either terminal but the negative terminal is always safer. A slip with a spanner connected to the positive terminal could easily short the Battery...flash, bang and burning. Be warned.

Either terminal removes power from the car...completely. There are some circuits that retain some level of charge due to components used...capacitors. Always expect a full Reset on Battery disconnect and then correcting Settings yourself.

If you had connected a mobile phone I suspect the Clock corrected from that or the internal Sat Nav?

Batteries always discharge...sometimes quickly or very slowly. Never rely on them too much.

They say in the manual to disconnect the negative so thats what i did. As for the clock, there was no mobile connected to it. Is it possible it corrected from the sat nav after it found my current position? That would explain it. But also the radio did not need the code to work.

The radio could do it perhaps? Although I've always suspected both DAB/FM unable to do that? DAB certainly a poor system for cars.
Sat Nav is very much time dependant so I'd likely vote for that.

No idea why the radio code didn't fade away. Quirky stuff?

Thanks for all your responses, im convinced that the radio is set automatically by the Sat Nav. I have another question which Is probably better in a car mechanics forum. The battery still discharges while it’s disconnected. In 24hrs it went from 12.45v to 12.32v then 24hrs later to 12.29v ill see what i can find in other forums.
Thanks again

The code didn't need resetting as the nissan connect is linked to your immobiliser system so it just checks with your immobiliser system whether or not it's still fitted to the same car. If you removed the radio and put it in another car it would then enter secure mode and you would have to reprogram the keys for it to then link itself with that cars immoboliser. And like calnorth said it gets the time setting theough sat nav as soon as it finds satellites to track. What battery are you running? Does it say the dreaded FFIAMM on it as these batteries are known for an internal short which would allow electrodes to flow from the negative side to the positive side thus bringing the positive electrodes charge down.
Hope this helps

Welcome to this forum.

When was the battery last changed? Three years seems to be the expected life of a battery.

To be honest I thought the clock got its timing from RDS - it's certainly not necessarily DAB or satnav since I've had previous cars which changed the clock which didn't have DAB or satnav.

The Time transmit function is in FM RDS and DAB specs.
