Hi all

I’m also considering adding a 12v power outlet in the boot for my coolerbox as we are going south this summer :D

The plan was the wire it continues just in order to keep it cooling during the short coffee and lunch stops during the road.
Do you guys think that this will aslo be too much askes of the cars battery?

I was told to wire it directly to this 6mm thick white cable just behind the panel next to the clutch (on the LHD vehicules that is) which is continues 12v but that would involve soldering

What are the more simple solutions? I would prefer working with scotch locks by exemple.

I like the solution that Hound used, wired to the 12v in the middle console with a simple scoth lock on both black and blue cables I suppose. You placed a 15A fuse between I think? Where exactly? On both cables? Doesn’t the cooler warms up to quickly during stops?

As an comparable but conitues alternative I thought about wiring up to the 12v outlet in the front. I understood that is should bu accessible by the side panel on the passenger side...?
This way you also could use the outlet in the boot for a lamp or even the tire repair kit without the motor running.

Last question, what wire thickness did you use? 2,5mm?

Thanks in advance!

lapalmeraie, I wouldn’t bother. The cooler box should stay sufficiently cold enough for a few hours, particularly if you put a couple of cooler packs in. Powering a cooler box just off the cars battery is a sure way to run it down quickly.
*added* Running the coolbox whilst the engine is running should pose no problem, ive done it for over 4 hours, but I wouldnt risk leaving it plugged in with the engine off for any lengthy period.

We used a Cool Box positioned in the Rear Compt. connected by an extension lead from the Armrest 12v for a trip of around 6 hours and 730kms without problems - Dave ;)

Ok thank you guys. I’ll use icepeaks indeed and if not opened to much it should do then I guess.

I’ll take it away behind the arm rest as hound did.
Did you installed a 15A fuze between? And if so where?

I’ll use a 2,5mm wire because I think the 1,5mm I allready from the other mods won’t do.

Where is that constant 12v towbar power connector situated? In left or right corner? under the floormat?

That is the wiring shown on my last picture (see above). In LHD cars it is situated just behind the side panel where the footrest is located. In some sort of way behind the fuzespanel. Where is this panel on RHD QQs?

I used PosiTaps, which are easier to work with than ScotchLoks, less damaging to wires, and re-usable. The console socket is protected by a 15A fuse anyway, but a precautionary extra fuse was placed inline between the +ve wire and the wiring extension to the 12V socket in the rear of the car (a good quality one from a VW group car). Ground was wired into the black wire in the same way. Not sure what gauge wire was that I used, but it's rated at 10A and quite chunky; the cool box draws 5A. The socket is ignition-powered so apart from a short period where the circuit stays live after ignition's switched off, there's no battery drain. Power is also cut if the doors are locked. The cooler's walls are insulated and I always use an ice pack or two.
