Leather on gear selector

Has anyone else had this? The leather on top of the CVT gear selector is starting to crack and show signs of wear. I don't ride the selector, I don't wear any rings and no one else has ever driven the car.

It will be only paper thin. Moisturise it. Nothing fancy and expensive, just plain old clear shoe polish!
