I've got two really visible badly repaired windscreen chips right in front of the drivers main view.. and it's ruddy irritating! Does anyone know of a way of improving badly repaired cracks please?

Get it replaced as it will at some point become an MOT fail.

Depends on their size. Old resin needs to be removed and repair repeated. It requires pretty skilled person to do so and success is not always guaranteed.

I was also "lucky" some time ago and earned one chip from flying over stones on highway. Autoglass denied repair as it is closer than 10cm from the edge of the windscreen, so I decided to give it a go and tried DIY. Here are few photos.

To me it also looks pretty good, especially when I did this for a first time. The repair kit costs me 14€ only. To be honest, I didn't have high hopes with the fix.

Anyways, yesterday I tried to fix with that glass repair kit also my iPhone screen which I accidentally cracked. The result is astonishing, it is hardly visible compare to what it was (see before / after photos below)
