Hi all,
Is it possible to remove the towbar holder yourself or would it be a garage job??? I've attached a pic of what I'm (the missus) looking to remove as it's a bit of an eyesore!!!

The picture you show is a detachable tow bar and you shouldn't see any of that, should be behind the back bumper. All you should see, when the tow hitch is removed, is the slot where the tow hitch locates

Qashowner, that's exactly what I see, so I'd imagine that the rear bumper would need to come off in order to remove the whole unit???

Yes, if you want to remove the tow bar, the bumper needs to be removed.

So decided against removing it, just gonna go at it with a wire brush and paint it black.. Is there any particular type of paint I need or just standard black gloss paint???

You might like to try Hammerite

As Gloucester has mentioned “Hammerite” is one of the well known Steel Paint Protectors which has been around for years. We have just had a new Water Pump System Installed in our Cellar and I treated the Steel Covers after Wire Brushing with Black Hammerite they now look like new, even the German Technicupians were impressed. Brushing is most likely better as you have more control in a confined space rather than spraying with possibly many obstructions and paint waste.

@DaveBerlin, that's actually a good idea.. I'll run the idea past the other half but I've a feeling she will opt for the black, I will definitely be painting as opposed to spraying, just need to give it a good scrubbing with the wire brush first... Thanks everyone for the replies.

Not done any Hammerite work for many years but if I remember correctly standing the pot of paint in hand hot water until the paint temperature equilibrates makes the paint go on more smoothly and reduces brush marks.
I painted lots of bits on my first car (1964 Ford Anglia £10, not the bargain it sounds) and second car (1963 Beetle £30 which was a proper bargain and I wish I still had it) in Hammerite.
