I had the same situation as you. I found a fluid loss and a leak, nothing else. The car drove without any problems because the thermostat did not break into two parts. There was fluid in the system, even though there was little of it in the expansion tank, it was still enough for proper operation. Considering your case, which is very similar to mine, I believe that your car did not suffer any damage.

Thanks DominoLP.
I picked up the car from the garage, they replaced the thermostat housing unit etc. There's no obvious sign of any engine damage, the car was running fine taking it back home 5 miles. So far so good, will keep a keen eye on it for next few weeks.
I'm assuming you're more likely to have engine trouble if thermostat housing unit fails while driving at motorway speeds when engine would be running very hot.

You are right but the temperature indicator did not move (no alert/notification anywhere, no light comes up), did not show high temps or something until engine failed (in my case)AnomanderRake wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 7:36 pm Thanks DominoLP.

It remains doubtful... but as far as I can conclude from my questionnaire almost all occurrences where on 2019 cars.
It didn't matter if it was a 140 or a 160HP model, nor MT or AT. Nor the location.
So theories about:
- aging of the plastic = could be true but then we should see 2020 popping op more and more (which isn't the case yet).
- wearing after X Km's/Miles = all kind of mileages appear to be confronted
- airpolution = all kind of regions/countries are impacted, not only big cities
My point of view is that this was indeed a wrongly produced item.
Maybe as simple as a wrong composition of the glue itself and it's even possible that this "problem" remained unnoticed simply bacause it was a bad batch.
This could explain why only a certain period of production is impacted, and why not all the cars have this problem and more why there was never a correction made to the "bad" part.

You are referring to the 70 plate (as a non UK member I had to search for the year... sept '20 - feb febr '21 that is.
I received one other 2020 occurrence, from Italy as well.
If they keep coming I will have to adapt me theorie I guess.
But for now the balance is 71 to 2.

It also comes loose in the same area. I have seen photographs of thermostats with this reinforcement also coming loose in the area of the joint. Mercedes has shown the way forward. We must wait for Nissan and Renault to do the same. Regards.
