Hi
I would like to draw attention to a problem I've had on my wife's 07 plate Qashqai 1.6 petrol. The fuel pipe located on top of the in tank fuel pump assembly had a tiny crack in it where it tees into the fuel hose. This is was obviously leaking very large amounts of petrol onto the top of the tank which was awash with fuel.
The external symptoms were a strong smell of petrol (obviously) and slight difficulty starting.
As this is obviously a dangerous but apparently rare issue I thought I may as well disseminate this so that others are forewarned.
Despite this and a few other problems, I am very pleased with this car, it is well put together and very easy to work on. It took less than five minutes to remove the rear seat base and access the pump/sender unit.
1.6 Petrol Fuel leak
That's quite a serious problem though. Apart from the petrol smell it was pretty hard to diagnose, the design of the tank prevented me from seeing where it had leaked from until I looked through the inspection hatch.
Goodness knows how it could have been damaged, the clearance between the tank and the body of the car is pretty good and it hasn't been accessed or disturbed prior to me finding the problem.

Thanks Hound.
This specific design of fuel tank, pump and sender unit looks to be common to a number of cars, not just Nissan. However having searched for anyone who owns a Qashqai with a similar complaint, it's seems to be a very rare problem, albeit serious, as the tank pump can rapidly empty the tank with the ignition on, as rod9669 points out all over the exhaust.
As I own one of the earlier model of this car I think it's worth flagging up the problem and the symptoms.

I have just had a similar type of issue with my 2008 registered Qashqai. It only leaked when I put in petrol and not afterwards.
I couldn't actually locate the leak and initially neither could my Local Nissan garage. In the end to convince the garage I had to take one of the mechanics to a local garage and slowly filled the petrol while he went under car and took some photographs of where the petrol was coming out.
I should mention I wasn't too keen on the mechanic being under the car as I put in some petrol.
The garage had to order a new fuel filler pipe and said it would only take half an hour to fit, eventually it took over 2 hours as they had to remove some suspension to fit the pipe. Luckily they had had quoted me for 1/2 hours work and this is what they charged me.
The pipe had a split about 1" long, but this was masked by the paint on the pipe.

Hi, My daughter has a strong petrol smell in her 2010 Quashqai and difficulty starting. I haven't been tolook at it yet but is replacing that pipe a DIY job ? I can do most easy stuff though I am not keen if I have to get underneath.
