I have an 18 plate 1.2T Qashqai, I want to make sure I have some oil spare to do top ups and wondered which one I should I get ? I rang Nissan them selfs and they said 5w / 40 but a google shows people go for 5w / 30 ? Which should I go for ?

Rich, we have had the 1,2L Tekna for 4 years now and always use the 5W / 40. We have used this also on 3 previous Nissans. Please take a look in “Search” as there are a lot of old posts / facts on Oil / Grades / Manufacturers - Dave :D

Rich,

Its not so much the grade but the specification of the oil. Grades are mostly aimed at ambient temperature range's. The specification is far more important.

SPECIFICATIONS
Specifications are important as these indicate the performance of the oil and whether they have met or passed the latest tests, or whether the formulation is effectively obsolete or out of date. There are two specifications that you should look for on any oil bottle and these are API (American Petroleum Institute) and ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Europeens d'Automobiles) all good oils should contain both of these, and an understanding of what they mean is important.

I nicked that text above. Have a look here for a good read.

This is an interesting read...

http://www.differencebetween.net/object ... -and-5w40/

If it's true, then there's no real difference in terms of protection between 5W30 and 5W40 for typical UK weather ranges, but it says that 5W30 gives you better fuel economy.

Looking at all the facts, 5W30 would probably be better in our engines, but 5W40 is what it says in the manual...
