1.5 dci engine (and dealer) problems after software update

Hello. Straight after a recall update the engine was turning over slowly and had a very throaty, noisy rattle. As it was not affecting performance I planned to wait until the annual service due in a few weeks. But a few days later the engine starting juddering and losing power between 40 and 50mph. After doing this 3 or 4 times I booked it in with the dealer. I have been told that none of these issues relate to the update (and it was bascially implied that I was lying when I said the engine noise and rattle on ignition started immediately after the update!) and that it is a complete coincidence that these problems started after the update and that their computer diagnostics are now showing that the glow plugs are faulty and need replacing which will cost just under £200 to fit. Model is J10 1.5 dci 2010 diesel with 44,000 miles on clock. Will new glow plugs fix the problem? And is this just a coincidence and the dealer therefore bears no liability?

I don't think you are alone in coincidences after an update

Thanks for the link. Reassuring - in some way - to know I am not alone; but also a sad commentary about the poor level of Nissan car build quality and its customer aftercare service

I've just had a recall letter for a software update for my new Qashqai Tekna. After the service I had they couldn't update the software because of computer issues at the garage.

Is this recall a matter of life or death or can drive without having to take time off work to have this upgrade done? Also what is the benefit of this upgarde?

Ring the dealer and ask?

Does anyone know what this update is for and what age of cars are involved?

While I had my Qashqai I never had any such letter - but they still told me software had been updated at the service.

Does the letter have any reference or other clues?

Update - I have now received a response from a customer services case manager at Nissan who advised that the post ECM update issue of a noisy rattling engine is a known by product of the update and that this will eventually resolve itself as the engine adjusts. Apparently the time it takes can be reduced wiith more motoway driving.

But my problem with the glow plugs which will cost money to fix is appraently a complete coincidence and unrelated to the update and replacing them will resolve the sporadic judderring problem at 50-70mph. As the juddering seems to have stopped I am hesitating to spend out on new glow plugs as my faith in their computer diagnostics is not too high.

After my Quasqui went into Nissan for a service and ECM recall on the 8th September 2018, 2 weeks later as we were driving in the motorway driving from Glasgow to Newcastle we experienced loss of engine power and the red engine management light came on. I contacted the dealership who stated that the ECM recall had nothing to do with this and I should bring it in for diagnostics. I had the AA check the car out and they said that the DPF appeared as a fault error which he managed to erase but advised me to take it to garage if the red light came on. It did so I took it back to Nissan who completed their diagnostics and came up the same as the AA report (which they failed to use as its generic) and I was charged £338 to fix this fault. I then went to pick the car up and had just drove out the Nissan garage when the red engine management light came back on and when I contacted them they seemed confused why as they had got the particles down from 23 to 3!! Another diagnostics was done and suddenly the car needed a full new turbo which would cost approx £1600! I queried why this hadn’t been picked up on the first diagnostic but was ‘fobbed’ off with a big long winded email stating what a diagnostics does! I had 2 independent mechanics tell me that it was rare that a car with only 46,000 miles needed a new turbo. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I think it may be connected to the ECM recall but not sure how to prove this?

Andy, glow plugs only assist start up of the engine, they are not in use under normal driving operations so don't waste your money. They just preheat inside the cold engine then do no more.
The engine can manage without them in warm weather, indeed we had a 1.5dci Clio and all 4 had failed, probably 1 by 1. It only became a little reluctant in winter, but even then started and ran perfectly.

Renault, same engines and engine controls are doing recalls on many cars, my 1.5 dci Kadjar has just had the reprogramming done at 2 year service. It actually puts much more load on the EGR valve as instead of being in use about 15% of the time, it is now over 50%. Later 1.5dci have had an uprated EGR valve fitted but they haven't replaced them on reprogrammed cars so may be trouble ahead. I could tell you several horror stories re VW/Audis, like the repairs needed after regramming on a Q5 that had Audi not honoured/accepted it was as a result of more gas through the EGR system, would have cost a relative £2500 in repairs, (62 plate car out of warranty)

There will be many more tales yet, this emissions scam has industry wide repercussions
