I've been looking at getting an X Trail in new year, but Chancellor's fiddling with Road Tax(VED)
makes it very hard to justify.
My current 1.5dci engine costs me zero in VED currently.
Hadn't realised till checking, that from 1 April 2018, VED First-Year Rate for diesels
is calculated as if they were in the VED band above.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-43204734
Though petrol model has higher CO2 emissions, it enjoys lower rate ie £205 versus £515
However, this will not apply on those diesel cars which meet Real Driving Emissions Step 2 (RDE2) standards.
The new requirement for manufacturers doesn't come in till 2020 so no cars available currently, yet they have the temerity
to charge you now despite fact you can't access such engines.
Interesting on extract below, that 18 &19" on X trail impact on VED, but note below says on Qashqai it doesn't

what a coincidence, I've been contemplating a 1.6dig-t X-trail to replace the QQ (I just need a bit more space).
I'll be looking in the summer, so hopefully the VED picture will be less confusing

After looking at this, maybe its better to let someone else pay the first year VED & buy a nearly new secondhand car.

Perhaps, and of course these latest generation cars, petrol + diesel, need AD BLUE which adds to running costs;
plus will petrol models have particulate filter issues like some diesel owners?
Must admit majority of my journeys are short, but had no issues on dpf front.

Don't forget the additional £55 First Registration fee on top of those figures...

Am I being pedantic if I say that although manufacturers aren't required to comply with RDE until September 2019 and RDE2 until January 2021 there's nothing to stop them voluntarily producing and testing cars to the new standards.

However I've found a pretty recent and very interesting article here:

No diesel currently on sale has been tested on or passed RDE2.
There is a substantial chance that only a handful of diesels (if any) will be officially RDE2 compliant by next April. Food for thought.
