Your car doesn't have a timing chain - if it's the 1.5dCi engine. It has a timing belt.

Looking at the relevant thickness of metal on the pulley centre compared to the weight of a crankshaft end, it may be that the pulley has broken. That's much better news...

... but only if the crankshaft is undamaged. And the reason it broke needs to be sorted too - maybe one of the parts it drives has seized?

Unlike the MX-5 the crankshaft doesn't protrude out through the crankshaft pulley - rather the crankshaft pulley appears to sit onto the drive belt pulley - see the bar that engages with the slot in the pulley:

... and then the fixing bolt clamps it all together.

You can see the teeth marks on a used one where they've been in contact:

I think it's more likely to be a failure of the pulley or the bolt rather than the crankshaft - good news!

But it's all guesswork to be honest on my part.

The pulley would have been removed and replaced when the timing belt was changed:

The teeth bit is what has come of it’s just a shinny piece of metal when you look down, it’s what the RAC man showed me

It would be all so much easier with a picture. When you hold the pulley in your hands do you see teeth? Or just the pulley?
