My new 19 plate Qashqai become very oil thirsty 10 litres for 5000 miles, in with dealer new engine being fitted. Are the 1.5 Dci units reliable? Am I just unlucky?

Not heard of anything fatal with the diesel engines. Maybe some internal problem if there were no obvious leaks.

Statistically there will be early life failures from production. Is it piston rings? I had Ford swap out and replace with a short engine and that was an ST 220 3 ltr petrol at about 10k miles. Bottom end rumble.

I'd hoped it would be a complete engine but they seemed to prefer a bit of game playing. Simply idiots I thought,,,

After 8 days of diagnostics they said No3 piston had failed tests so new engine complete with turbo ordered,to be fitted, Nissan said no to new car exchange and would replace engine if faulty.
Evidently I have to give them 1 go at sorting before I can reject the car.
Just concerned whether this is a one off or not.
Dealer & Nissan say the 1.5 Diesel engine is very reliable and used in several vehicles and they have not had a issue before.
I just wanted to air my concerns.
I did research the Qashqai before purchase and it had excellent reviews so found this most disconcerting.

8 days testing? Thats a p*ss take. Should be a couple hours pressure testing..at most.

I don't think they should get a first repair option with a fault of that magnitude. Its major surgery !!

Welcome to this forum.

The diesel engines are usually reliable.

Update re engine fitting. Engine arrived at dealers a week a go tuesday, due to work load not started fitting straight away, supposed to have been ready today at latest, told today, poss ready tuesday next week.
They have had my car for 3 weeks and a day, if it comes back next week.
Their technician wants to make sure it's done correctly????
Does not build my confidence up!
Originally told, 3 days diagnostics, if engine required 2 days for ordered engine to arrive, then max 4 days to fit and test i.e. 7 to 10 days.

The 1.5 DCI is usually OK mine is running pretty nice just had cam belt at 60000 and it has made a big difference in how it runs.

I believe parts direct from Nissan are 5-7 days for delivery ( That has been my experience ) so I think the being told 2 days was incorrect info.
I would be a little pee off as you are but also would be happy to leave them to take there time and fit test every thing correct, I think the true story is the dealer would of had work booked in weeks in advance ( Service jobs ) so your car has put extra pressure on them and it is not getting full attention, they will be moving off your car to complete work that was booked before your problem landed on them.
Plus your new engine will more than likely be a bare engine so they then have to strip your engine and place the parts on the new engine so time consuming.

I think waiting for a new car would take longer than replacing the engine

Hope fully every thing will work out good.

I agree with what you say.
I had to wait for 3 weeks to book the car in with the dealer at a time that suited them.
Also had to ring them first week for progress report even though they said should know in 3 days what the problem is and would keep me informed, they never rang back.
Then I called in week monday, gave up waiting for them to call me back, only to be told past tests can't find the fault and still looking, more tests on wednesday.
Got home phoned Nissan to voice my concerns, left message with claim manager, next day, tuesday call from dealer, surprise, fault found with piston No 3 needs new engine.Next day, Wednesday another call engine has arrived should be ready middle to end of following week.
Just annoying that they are not keeping in touch unless I instigate a call.

Let's hope this doesn't turn into the 1.2 engine fiasco, so fingers crossed to all us 1.5 diesel owners.

Hope you get it sorted soon, John.
