You'll only get a mixed response on here. Better to research yourself on the web. Look at some vehicle reliability studies.

Doesn't the choise petrol or diesel depends more on your usage than general reliability?

Not necessarily. I’ve got a 1.5dci.
Diesel is cheaper. Better fuel economy by 25 to 30% as a minimum. Initial purchase price was almost the same as a petrol through online broker. Insurance costs are cheaper or the same, depending on your age and company. I plan on keeping the car until it’s on it’s last legs, so overall I’ll be quids in. The only unknown element just now is the ‘petrol/diesel’ debate relating to the environmental emissions, and there will be lots of twists and turns before we finally know the truth about it all.

Aha! Here in Belgium Diesel isn't worth the extra charges if you don't exceed the 25.000km/year and it even moved further on to 30.000Km recently as the costs of Diesel rises more and more.

When buying my QQ DIG-T 1.6 I foresaw this trend and deliberately choose to switch back to petrol again after 5 years Diesel. Everybody here considered me nuts as Belgium is totally Diesel minded. "I wouldn't be able to resell etc".... Only a couple of weeks ago the gouvernement announced the plans to discourage as much as possible Diesel cars for emission reasons of course....

We see it in France as well (as in London?) where more and more cities limit the acces to the city center for polluting cars. I bought my Crit'air vignet for France which is "level 1", just under the electric cars :)

Funny to see how regional price differences make which engine type you choose after all. Here in French speaking Belgium for instance (only some 100m from my door), inscription fee for the exact same 1.6 rises with €1000,- ! Completely insane of course and the reason why this engine type is hardly sold there.

This said; both your and my discours confirm that other reasons than reliability decides what engine you pick. :)

I've had a 1.6 petrol 2ltr petrol and now have a 1.2 petrol and never had a reliability problem with any of them so I would say its just down to your own requirements.
